Marguerite Feldman, WWII Army nurse

Nursing was more than just a career for Marguerite Pekarske Feldman.

"It was her life, " said Patricia Raverty of Burlington, Mrs. Feldman's daughter and only child.

Nursing afforded Mrs. Feldman the opportunity to meet her husband. It also gave her the means to support herself and her child when her husband died just four years after they were married.

And it earned her a legacy, in the hundreds of wounded servicemen whose lives she helped save as an Army nurse during World War II, and in the thousands of babies she helped deliver during a 25-year career at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Mrs. Feldman died Tuesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. She was 84.

Her mother dreamed of being a nurse when she was a teen, Raverty said, and made good on the dream by graduating from the first nursing class at Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1940. She joined the Army Nursing Corps two years later and spent the rest of the war laboring in field hospitals, following the Allies' push through North Africa and up the boot of Italy.

"She came back with lots of wonderful stories and lots of pictures, " Raverty said. "Looking back, I think what a marvelous adventure that must have been, and what a daunting one."

Mrs. Feldman continued nursing soldiers after she returned to the states, at a Veterans Administration hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where she met her future husband, who was recuperating from tuberculosis he contracted in the Pacific.

When he died after they had been married just four years, she went to work at St. Luke East in the maternity department. In the late 1950s, she began to care for premature infants, and she stayed at it until she retired in 1982 at age 63.

"Every once in awhile someone would come up to her in the grocery store and say, `You delivered me, '" Raverty said. "I don't know how many births (she assisted at), but it was a lot."

In retirement, she was active with the seniors group and the Rosary Society at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas.

The independence and courage her mother displayed during her career stood out again during the final illness that took her life, Raverty said.

Mrs. Feldman was diagnosed with a malignant tumor on a bile duct about four months ago. One doctor told her there was nothing that could be done about it, but another said there was a procedure that might work. Mrs. Feldman elected to take the chance. "She walked into the hospital carrying her suitcase" earlier this week, Raverty said, and died of complications from the surgery Tuesday.
