Mary Elizabeth Cannon, 92
Mary Elizabeth Cannon, who worked for 30 years as a social worker for the Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission in Newport before retiring at age 85, died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas. She was 92.
Mrs. Cannon, of Fort Thomas, worked as a social worker in Illinois before moving to the area about 50 years ago with her husband, Richard C. Cannon, said her attorney and friend, Jim Kruer. Richard Cannon, an accountant, went to work for the Community Action Commission and his wife joined him.
She played several different roles with the agency, including working in its Head Start program.
Mrs. Cannon was fond of reading - and rereading - her favorite books, "Little Women" and books about World War II, particularly, Winston Churchill. "I think she was introduced to `Little Women' by her mother, " Kruer said. "And she was enamored of Churchill. She admired his wisdom, and she was a very wise lady herself."
Mrs. Cannon was an active Girl Scout volunteer and also helped out at her church, St. Thomas, in Fort Thomas.
She was also a big fan of sports teams from the University of Notre Dame, because of her Irish ancestry and because both her husband and father attended the school, Kruer said.
She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C.., and was active in its alumni association.
"She was a real good soul, a gentle lady, " said Kruer.
Her husband died in 1980.
