Charles T. Donaldson, former police chief
Former Independence Police Chief Charles T. Donaldson never stopped accepting new challenges through three decades of police work.
The Korean War veteran took course after course on investigating arson, homicide, narcotics and white-collar crime.
He learned sign language to aid in investigations involving deaf suspects or witnesses.
When he joined the Fraternal Order of Police as a Covington officer, he rose through the ranks to become president of the Covington FOP, president of the Kentucky FOP and trustee of the National FOP.
When he retired from Covington and became chief in Independence, he threw himself into his work on the other side of the negotiating table, rising to president of the Northern Kentucky Police Chiefs Association and Kentucky State Police Chiefs Association.
"Every organization he went into, he went into with all his heart and soul. He was always dedicated to his men and always thinking of them first, " said his wife, Elaine Grushas Donaldson of Covington.
Mr. Donaldson, 67, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth South in Edgewood.
Mr. Donaldson was born in Covington. He graduated Simon Kenton High School and trained to become a police officer at Eastern Kentucky University.
He served as a Marine in Korea, earning the Korean Ribbon, National Defense and United Nations honors before his honorable discharge in 1956.
He was given a keys to the cities of Covington and Independence as well as state and national citations for his work.
Mr. Donaldson came out of retirement last year to become interim chief of Ludlow during a time of upheaval in that department. After fulfilling his commitment for five months, he declined an offer to take the job permanently, explaining that he had promised to watch a new grandson.
"He was just an all-around great person. He always thought about everybody else first. I know he touched a lot of different lives on a lot of levels and areas, " his wife said.
Survivors include daughter LaCherese Brient of Independence; sons Garry Donaldson of Independence, Mark Donaldson of Covington and Roger Donaldson of Lebanon, Ill.; sisters Cherese Moore of Harrison, Ohio, Ardele Wiehoff of Florence and Pearlene Lawrence of Southgate. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine Rothring Donaldson in 1977.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Allison & Rose in Taylor Mill. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Church in Covington.
Burial will be at Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

William Roger Brown, 81, of Brenham, Texas, formerly of Alexandria, died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday in Brenham. He was a retired merchant marine and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Loretta Brown, died in 2001.
Survivors include daughters, Sheree L. Evans of Brenham and Janet Smith of Arizona; a son, Tom Brown of Covington; and a sister, Evelyn Stafford of Alabama.
Graveside services will be at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
John M. Eckler, 80, of Dry Ridge, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired funeral director and former owner of Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. During his career, he began an ambulance service, was a volunteer fireman and a 4H volunteer. He was a member of Richwood Presbyterian Church in Walton, Shriners in Cincinnati and Williamstown Kiwanis. He was a former Dry Ridge city council member, built the first flower shop in Dry Ridge and was a former semi-professional football player. He was an ambassador to the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport and was a World War II veteran. His first wife, Ruth Eckler, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Criss Eckler; a son, Jim Eckler of Louisville; a daughter, Ann Brewer of Florence; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Denise Renae Mullins Flanagan, 32, of Covington, died 6:08 a.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
Survivors include daughters, Jessica Mullins, Toree Flanagan and Molly Flanagan, all of Covington; her mother and stepfather, Cheryl Rae and James Golden of Covington; her father and stepmother, Larry Taylor and Janice Mullins of Morning View; sisters, Christy Mullins of Morning View, Melissa Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio, Azura Gierach and Gayle Saylor, both of Harrison, Ohio, Sheere Brock of Cincinnati and Jill Scroggins of Highland Heights; and grandparents, Martha Edmonds of Taylor Mill, Alma Golden of Lake City, Tenn., and Marvin and Wilma Mullins of Morning View.

Joyce Ann Gibson, 60, of Hebron, died Friday at her home. She was a retired employee of Andrew Jergens Co., Cincinnati, and member of the Florence Lions Club.
Survivors include her husband, Wardell "Sam" Gibson; daughters, Kimberly Joy Webster of Port Charlotte, Fla., Pamela Rena Master of Hebron, Gabrea Kaye Bender of Union and Samantha Jo Gibson of Las Vegas; her mother, Temple Irene Nagel of Cold Spring; brothers, William Earl Nagel of Melbourne and Robert Wayne Nagel of Highland Heights; and seven grandchildren.

Clara Christine Hering, 77, of Newport, died at 3:35 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired quality control inspector with Johnson Controls, Florence, and a former member of the Campbell County Women's Democratic Club. Her husband, Alonzo Hering, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Debbie Peluso, Jenny Guidugli and Kim Barbiea, all of Newport; a son, Jack Hering of Highland Heights; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Sarah Rita Huey, 85, of Florence, died Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence. Her husband, Walter Huey, preceded her in death.

Benjamin Franklin Hughes, 82, of Florence, died Friday at Wesley Hall, Cincinnati. He was a construction worker and an Army veteran.

Elbert D. King Jr., 48, of Owenton, died Wednesday in Potter County, Texas. He was a truck driver with L.A. Scott Trucking Co., Dry Ridge.

Daniel L. Lindeman, 53, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a laborer and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.

Eugene L. Moran, 72, of Maysville, died at 6:58 a.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired independent contractor and a member of Lawrence Creek Christian Church.

Macistro F. Nocero, 81, of Covington, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was owner of Nocero Grocery Store and a World War II veteran.
