Joseph Seibert, 74, golf club maker
That Joseph H. Seibert came from a large, closely knit family was illustrated in the final days of his life.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on Oct. 2, the birthday of his wife, Marie, who died in 1989.
He went into the hospital on Oct. 5, birthday of his son, Wayne.
And he came home, after doctors said there was nothing they could do, on Oct. 10, birthday of one of his grandsons.
Mr. Seibert, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at his home. He was 74.
"He went quick and peacefully, " said Wayne Seibert, of Crestview. "His last wish was to come home and be with his kids and grandkids."
Mr. Seibert held on against his disease until he received assurances from his daughter, Terri Krebs of Newport, that his passing would not cause her to give up her fight against breast cancer, Wayne Seibert said.
"She promised him that she would keep on fighting, because that's the way he raised us, to be fighters, " Wayne Seibert said.
Mr. Seibert spent most of his working life making golf clubs, first for 25 years for MacGregor Golf in Cincinnati, then when that company moved its operations to California, for 12 years for Cincinnati golf. He made clubs for stars of the game like Jack Nicklaus, but also for his family and friends.
"He made clubs, basically, for all of us, " Wayne Seibert said.
He later worked at Kentucky Motors in Covington, finally retiring for good in 1998.
His father was a gregarious sort, Wayne Seibert said, who liked to joke and laugh, particularly at parties.
"He was not one to sit in the corner, he was not a quiet person, " Wayne Seibert said. "He was a great dad, grandpa and brother, just a good guy all around."
Mr. Seibert was a member of St. Therese Church in Southgate and a Navy veteran.
