Edward Bailey Sr., 'jack of all trades'
Edward Bailey Sr., band leader, former sheriff, church organist and consummate salesman, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. He was 70.
"He was a jack of all trades, " said his son, Walter Bailey of Covington. "If he wanted to do something, he read a book. And it usually turned out pretty good."
Mr. Bailey married
when he was 15. "He and mom built their first home from scratch in Latonia Lakes, and it's still standing, " said Walter Bailey.
"He would try anything. He always worked for himself."
In the early 1950s, he bought a panel truck and created his own doughnut delivery route. He played piano at Walt's Hitching Post and Nick's Grove restaurants and served as "sheriff" of Latonia Lakes.
In the mid 1950s, he moved the family to Florida, where he ran a shrimp boat, started an electroplating business and became a linen and towel supplier for hotels. "He'd get a roll of linens and we'd cut it in the back yard and mom would sew the towels, " Walter Bailey said.
They returned to Northern Kentucky in the 1960s and he started a concrete business, sold insurance and joined the musicians union and started playing in Holiday Inns in several states. He owned rental property and had his own woodworking shop. "He made dog and cat caskets for a vet in Las Vegas, " his son said.
He and his first wife divorced. He married
Ruth Hounts in 1990.
He was a member of Latonia Christian Church, Covington FOP, Latonia Gun Club and was a Ham radio operator.
He developed heart problems about two years ago.
Survivors besides his wife and son include three other sons, Shawn Bailey of Florence, Edward E. Bailey Jr. of Rabbit Hash and Aaron Bailey of Covington; a daughter, Scarlett Dane of Elsmere; brothers, David Bailey of Eustis, Fla., and Christopher Bailey of Orlando, Fla.; a stepson, Howard Law of Cold Spring; a stepdaughter, Barbara Rauh of Oregonia, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Latonia Christian Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Orley Chaney Jr., 65, of Dry Ridge, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired truck driver for Crosset Company, Florence, and a member of Sherman Full Gospel Assembly, Dry Ridge.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Joyce Chaney; sons, Orley Joseph Chaney of San Pedro, Calif., Joe Ratliff of Dry Ridge, Jeff Ratliff of Crittenden and Johnny Thacker of Independence; daughters, Barbara Chaney of Covington and Janie Oliver of Piner; brothers, Gary Chaney of Somerset and Jimmy Chaney of Covington; sisters, Cheryl Joiner of Cincinnati, Alma Chaney of Latonia and Caroline Trenary of Dixon, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sherman Full Gospel Assembly. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Full Gospel Assembly, 3185 Dixie Highway, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.

Delmar Rayburn "Stump" Cooper, 74, of Independence, at 6:45 a.m. Friday at Veterans Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired Teamster, an Army and Merchant Marine veteran of World War II and a member of Golden Rule Lodge No. 345 F&AM, Latonia, Indra Consistory Scottish Rite, Taylor Mill Lions Club and Taylor Mill Church of Christ. His first wife, Marjorie A. Casullo Cooper, died in 1996, and sons, Jefferson Taylor and Delray "Buster" Cooper, died in 1999 and 1985, respectively.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Cooley Cooper; daughters, "Cissy" VanHuss of Ryland Heights, Bea Angel of Independence and Beverly Ashcraft of Owenton; a son, Donald Marsh of Independence; a brother, Glenn "Sluggo" Cooper of Independence; stepdaughter, Stephanie Norman of Green Hills, Ohio; stepsons, David Miller of Cincinnati, Samuel Miller of Lakeview, Fla., and James Miller of Dover, Del.; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Eleanor Mary Houlehan, 94, of Dillsboro, Ind., formerly of Florence, died October 13 at Manderly Health Care Center, Osgood, Ind.
She was a secretary for Anderson Publishing Co., Cincinnati, and a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, Milan, Ind. Her husband, Francis J. "Frank" Houlehan, died in 1971.
Survivors include her sons, James Houlehan of Cincinnati, John Houlehan of Florence and Dennis Houlehan of Villa Hills; daughters, Carol Ehlman of Dillsboro, Mary Butler of Cincinnati and Kathleen Metzger of Alexandria; sisters, Elizabeth Wirth of Eustis, Fla., and Eileen Thurston of Atlanta, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:10 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Boyd Johnson, 89, of Worthville, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a former grocery store owner in Worthville, a retired farmer and operated a poultry and egg business several years. He served as a Carroll County magistrate and a member of Dean Memorial United Methodist Church, Worthville.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ward Johnson; a daughter, Sharon Dillard of Bowling Green; sons, Richard Johnson of Worthville, and Charles Johnson of Bowling Green; a stepdaughter, Marcie Valonte of Michigan; stepsons, Bobby Black of Florida and Freddie Black of Worthville; a sister, Nell Orr of Bowling Green; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jeanne A. Lehmann, 77, of Highland Heights, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Newport.
Survivors include her husband, Frank H. Lehmann.

Lillian Ester Lillard, 84, of Lecanto, Fla., formerly of Gallatin County, died Wednesday at Surrey Place Health Care, Lecanto. She was homemaker and a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Danny Lillard of Sparta; daughters, Janice Hamilton of Crystal River, Fla., and Ester Mae Vest of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; brothers, Oakley Noel and J.C. Noel, both of Glencoe; a sister, Loraine Webster of Burlington; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery, Glencoe.
John T. Noll, 52, of Morehead, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Wesley Hall, Cincinnati. He was a purchaser for Morehead State University.
Survivors include his sister, Carol Sander of Fort Thomas.

Charles Ollie Porter, 71, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.

Robert Herman Rottinghaus, 86, of Fort Mitchell, died September 24 at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. He was a former insurance salesman with Metropolitan Life Insurance, Florence, a member of Senior Citizens of Fort Mitchell, and Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Anna Rottinghaus, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, John Rottinghaus of Villa Hills and Tom Rottinghaus of Murray; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church. His body has been donated to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Joe Sculley, 88, of Warsaw, formerly of Sanders, died Thursday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. He was a retired coal miner with Blue Diamond Coal Co. His wife, Minerva Coombs Sculley, sons, Robert Sculley and Denver Sculley, and a daughter, Mae Delia Heightchew, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Delta Mae Mahoney of Port Royal, and Betty Mullins of Hazard; sons, Willie Curtin Sculley of Worthville and Taylor Sculley and Larry Sculley, Sr., both of Port Royal; a stepdaughter, Pauline Porter; 31 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren.

Deborah Lee Flynn Starcher, 51, of Morning View, died Friday at her home. She was an educational aide at Piner Elementary School and a member of Nicholson Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Starcher; a daughter, Jennifer Marie Phipps of Crittenden; a son, Bradley Alan Starcher of Morning View; mother, Shirley Miller Hymn of Cincinnati; brothers, Timothy Lee Flynn of Lexington and Thomas Lee Flynn of Bethel, Ohio; and a grandchild.

Donald G. "Butch" Stanfield, 63, of Edgewood, died Wednesday at his home. He was owner of Bell Day Cleaning Service, a member of American Legion Post No. 11, Newport, and a Kentucky Colonel.
Survivors include his wife, Alvena Stanfield; sons, Donald Jr., Kevin and Vernon; daughters, Joyce, Tina, Peggy, Melanie, Sherry and Sally; and grandchildren.

Edith Faye Staudinger, 71, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at her home. She was a former mailroom clerk for the Internal Revenue Service.
Survivors include sons, David Paul Staudinger of Live Oak, Fla., and Gregory Wayne Staudinger of Winter Haven; daughters, Helen Louise Specker of Diamond Head, Miss., and Alberta Jo King of Norwood, Ohio; sisters, Mame Wilson and Mary Herman, both of Covington; a brother, Harold Witlock of Oxford, Ohio; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dora Jane Stephens, 83, of Florence, died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence United Methodist Church. Her husband, Wilbur Lee Stephens, died in 1987.

Margaret P. Whitehead, 69, of Crestview, died Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Albert A. Whitehead Sr., died in 1985.
