Norma Mains, 74, retired owner of Newport bars

Norma Francis Mains, 74, of Newport and formerly of Bellevue, retired owner with her late husband of the Dream Bar and Fran's Bar in Newport, died Saturday at St. Luke East Hospital in Fort Thomas.

Mrs. Mains and her late husband, Howard Earl Mains, owned the Dream Bar on Monmouth Street from 1961 until 1973 when they sold the bar because of Mr. Mains' health problems.

However, a year later they decided to get back in the bar business and opened Fran's Bar a block away from the Dream Bar. They continued to operate Fran's Bar until Mr. Mains' death in 1981, and Mrs. Mains sold the bar a short time later.

"Both bars were very nice family bars, " said Mrs. Mains' daughter, Becky Behymer of Southgate. "When mom and my step-father opened Fran's Bar, they made it just like their Dream Bar had been. The same crowd, plus some new friends, came along.

"Mom was very well-known and very well-liked. She loved her friends, and she had many friends. She loved to have fun. People really enjoyed the parties she had at her house.

"She was very strong willed and opinionated. She got a lot of joy out of life. In her later years, she especially enjoyed her grandkids."
