Donald Martin Sr., Fort Wright councilman

The family of Donald K. Martin Sr., who spent much of his adult life in public service to the city of Fort Wright, has decided not to take down his campaign signs despite his sudden death Sunday.

Mr. Martin is still a candidate for re-election to the Fort Wright City Council. As a final tribute to his years of service, the family hopes he can get enough votes for re-election, said his son, Donald Martin Jr., of Fort Wright.

It's too late to take his father's name off the ballot anyway, he said.

Mr. Martin, 66, died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after the lining of his aorta ruptured, his son said.

Mr. Martin moved to Barbara Circle in Fort Wright about 40 years ago, and lived the rest of his life there.

In service to the city he was a police officer, a firefighter and honorary fire chief, a police court judge, a city councilman and mayor from 1989 to 1995.

And he and his wife, Anita, chaired development of the Fort Wright veterans memorial.

He got involved in politics through the Fort Wright Civic Club, which he formerly headed as president, and the fire department.

His son thinks a desire to help people and help solve problems attracted him to public service. He brought that attitude to his work as a city police officer, too.

"Instead of coming in and knocking heads, it's like, `Let's see what we can do to work this out, '" Donald Martin Jr. said.

Mr. Martin was also a former Kenton County deputy sheriff, a former member of the St. Agnes Church council and a former youth sports coach.

In his last months, he spent much of his time helping his wife of 46 years in her battle with cancer. He also spent many hours watching his grandchildren play sports.

"I didn't know too many people that just didn't want to know dad, " the younger Martin said. "He was just that kind of guy."

Survivors in addition to his wife and son include another son, Steven Martin, of Fort Wright; daughters, Marianne "Murph" Averdick of Fort Wright, Nancy Martin Ledonne of Fort Mitchell and Jennifer Kinsley of Erlanger; a brother, John "Jack" Martin of Cincinnati; a stepbrother, Robert Sullivan of Rocton, Ill.; and 11 grandchildren.
