Carl Bibbins Jr., cared about people
Carl L. Bibbins Jr. made hundreds of friends in life by never letting the special courtesies he received go unappreciated or the little accomplishments he saw go unsaluted.
In death, Mr. Bibbins is thanking people still.
When his son, Rick, gives his eulogy Friday, he will follow the instructions of his father and pass on thanks to the many people who filled Carl Bibbins' life.
"Even from the grave, he'll be thanking people, " said Rick Bibbins, of Taylor Mill.
Mr. Bibbins, 68, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
Mr. Bibbins genuinely cared about people and had no reticence in showing it, his son said.
"He was the one who would always be the first to call or drop by when someone was sick, " Rick Bibbins said. "In restaurants, he always would tell the waitress what a great job she did. I can't believe the people's lives he touched."
Many of those lives were those of kids he coached during 16 years in Knothole leagues in Newport. He and Lee Redmond led a team to the Cincinnati championship in 1971, winning the title at Riverfront Stadium.
Later in life, he was a faithful follower of his grandchildren's athletic exploits through youth sports leagues and at Holy Cross and St. Henry high schools.
"His last 18 years revolved around his grandkids, " Rick Bibbins said. "He lived to run around to their basketball and baseball games."
His father could be vocal at officials during those contests, Bibbins said.
"My wife asked me the other day: `Who didn't like your Dad?' I told her: `Other than some referees and umpires, I can't think of anybody.'"
Mr. Bibbins retired as a district sales manager after 25 years at Foxboro Corp. in Cincinnati. After that, he consulted for 10 years at Dow Corning in Carrollton.
He was diagnosed about eight years ago with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a degenerative lung disorder that finally took his life.
"When the doctors told him what he had, they gave him three years to live, but he battled it. As recently as last fall, he was out playing golf, toting the oxygen tank on the cart with him, " Rick Bibbins said.
Mr. Bibbins, an avid angler, was a former choir member at St. Vincent Church in Newport and a member of St. Therese Church in Southgate.
Other survivors include his wife, Patricia Dietrich Bibbins; son Randy Bibbins of Florence; a sister, Joann Grosser of Seymour, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Robert Young, quit job to care for wife
When his wife of 29 years was in a car wreck and fell into a coma, Robert Earl Young Jr. sat by her hospital bed, reading her a Harlequin romance novel and praying she'd wake up.
When she came out of the coma and came home disabled, he quit his job to take care of her.
Even when he himself was diagnosed with cancer six years later, the Morning View man continued that care.
On Sunday, after battling cancer for six years, Mr. Young died. He was 64.
In December, he and his wife, Marilyn, who met on a blind date, would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.
"This man was a saint, " said Mr. Young's son-in-law, Marc Figgins of Independence. "He was taking chemotherapy and at the same time taking care of her."
Mr. Young was a tariff specialist with Cincinnati Bell and his wife a secretary and bookkeeper at Simon Kenton High School when she had her wreck in 1990. She spent two months in a coma and a year in the hospital before she was released, needing 24-hour-a-day care, Figgins said. Her recovery was documented in a lengthy Kentucky Post story in 1991.
Rather than put her in a nursing home, Mr. Young retired from his job to take care of her. "He was the most devoted person, " Figgins said.
Marilyn and Bob Young were also known for a cabin they donated to the state 4-H program. The two-story, three-room cabin, built in the 1800s, was dismantled log by log in late 1990 and rebuilt on a farm in Nicholas County.
A plaque at the site honors the couple.
Mr. Young was a member of New Banklick Baptist Church Pioneers and the National Rifle Association. He liked to hunt and used to travel to Montana and Colorado with friends to hunt elk and mule deer, his son-in-law said.
