Giles Conrad, owned Waco Oil Co., bank
Giles Conrad, 71, of Hebron, who parlayed a Covington gas station into the Waco Oil Co. and became a prominent Northern Kentucky business and civic leader, died Saturday of lung cancer at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
A new Boone County park was recently dedicated and named in Mr. Giles' honor after he donated 43 acres of land to create the only Ohio Riverfront park in Boone County.
Mr. Conrad and his brother, Don, opened a gas station at Tenth and Scott streets in Covington in the mid 1950s. They kept building their business and accumulated more than 30 gas stations in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
The brothers turned their operation into Waco Oil Co. in the 1980s and almost all Shell stations in the area were owned by Waco. The company has since been sold to Shell.
The Conrad brothers also bought Covington Trust Bank, which later became a Huntington bank.
Mr. Conrad, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, was a member of American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia, a board member of Huntington Bank and belonged to Hebron Lutheran Church. He also was very active in the Special Olympics of Northern Kentucky.
"Giles never met a stranger; he was very outgoing, " said Mr. Conrad's wife of 35 years, Selma McGlasson Conrad. "He was very happy-go-lucky.
"He was diagnosed with lung cancer in May and underwent chemotherapy, but he didn't let that stop him. He went out daily. He had always loved traveling and he continued to travel.
"He lived life to the fullest. He said he had no regrets. He said he was a very, very happy man."
