Maurice 'Mike' Murphy, 76, was proud of Irish heritage

Maurice J. "Mike" Murphy loved Ireland and all things Irish.

Mr. Murphy, formerly of Edgewood, helped found the Cincinnati St. Patrick's Day parade in the 1960s, along with other members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

It was the same bunch that, about 25 years ago, started the tradition of "stealing" the statue of St. Patrick from Holy Cross-Immaculata Church in Mount Adams, said Mr. Murphy's daughter, Ann Schuette of Edgewood.

While researching his genealogy, Mr. Murphy found his great-grandparents' homestead in County Kerry, Ireland, bought the place and retired there in 1980. He died in Cahersiveen, Ireland, Sunday at the age of 76.

After he moved to Ireland, Mr. Murphy married an Irish woman, Mary Casey Murphy, and had four children, the last one when he was 66 years old, Schuette said. He already had five children from a previous marriage in the United States.

Mr. Murphy had served as secretary of the Queen City Rugby Club in Cincinnati, and he stayed involved with the game in Ireland, too. He entertained Cincinnati teams there and showed them around, Schuette said.

He lived on the side of a mountain overlooking the Skellig Islands in St. Finian's Bay, where monks used to live.

"He never met a stranger, " his daughter said. "Everyone who met him really liked him."

Mr. Murphy followed the exploits of his grandchildren closely and returned to the states last year to see grandson Shawn Murphy play football for the University of Cincinnati. He had planned a trip for earlier this month to see grandson Greg Schuette play for Dixie Heights High School, but had to cancel after he became too ill to travel, Schuette said.

Mr. Murphy was former owner of the M&M; Insurance Co.

Survivors in addition to his wife and daughter include sons, Joseph Murphy and Michael Murphy, both of Cincinnati, and Maurice Murphy and Jonathan Murphy, both of Ireland; daughters, Mary Murphy of Allegheny, Oregon, Patricia Franklin of Symmes Township, Ohio, and Bridget Murphy and Eilis Murphy, of Ireland, ; a sister, Eileen Flanigan of Dearborn, Mich.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
