Jack Dewitt's music made people smile
Jack Dewitt Turner of Florence was a self-taught musician who shared his talents at festivals and nursing homes.
Mr. Turner died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, following a heart attack on Thursday. He was 82.
He retired in 1978 as a fleet service supervisor for American Airlines. He filled his retirement with music and with people.
"My dad was a real gentle person who liked being around people. He enjoyed talking to them. He was a real people person, " said his daughter, Susan M. Bentle, of Union.
He was an active member of Florence Christian Church and a past president of Boone County AARP Chapter. He was a member of the American Airlines Vanguards retirement group and Florence Masonic Lodge No. 949 F&AM.
But most people knew him as the man who kept people smiling with rousing renditions of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and Willie Nelson tunes. He and his friend, Jeff Gaunce of Walton, played music for birthday parties and special events at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Boone County and Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, formerly Lakeside Place Nursing Home, in Highland Heights.
"They did that for 20 years, " Bentle said. "They just wanted to provide some entertainment for them."
Mr. Turner played piano and guitar. "He played by ear. They'd play all the old songs, " his daughter said. They also played at the Florence Y'All festival.
"He was always willing to share, " his daughter said. "He was ready to help out whenever he could."
Also surviving are his wife, Lucille Turner; a son, Edward Ray Turner of Columbia, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Florence Christian Church, 300 Main Street, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Herbert F. Caudill, 73, of Cold Spring, died at 11:20 p.m. Thursday at his home.
He was a retired certified public accountant with Ernst and Young and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Caudill; daughters, Robin Stuessel-Temke of Anderson Township, Ohio, and Regina Welscher of Highland Heights; a son, Gregory Caudill of Cincinnati; brothers, Raymond Caudill of Alexandria, James Caudill of Owensboro and Ronald Caudill of Fort Thomas; sisters, Veeda Long of Berea and Mary Glann of Bellevue; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Highland United Methodist Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Paul Kenneth Downing, 75, of Newport, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired teacher at Holy Cross High School, Latonia, St. Vincent de Paul School, Newport, and LaSalle High School, Cincinnati, and was a ballroom dance instructor for Arthur Miller.
Survivors include his brothers, Jerry Downing of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Howard Downing of Alexandria, Va.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Mr. Downing donated his body to the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Frank Gough, 81, of Covington, died at 5 a.m. Aug. 30 at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
He was retired from C&O; Railroad, a member of Railroad Union Local 759, and a World War II veteran of the Army. His wife Cyritta Gough, died in 1999.
Survivors include his son, Michael Gough of Covington; daughters, Sheila Whitford of Fort Mitchell, Gwen Wendy Krebs of Hebron and Jenny Sommers of Covington; brothers, Ed Gough of Fort Thomas and Bill Gough of Erlanger; sisters, Sister Denise Gough, O.S.B., of Morehead, Sister Margaret Mary Gough, O.S.B., and Sister Stella Gough, O.S.B., both of Villa Hills, and Kathleen Gough and Eileen Gough, both of Taylor Mill; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Mr. Gough donated his body to the University of Cincinnati Medical School. F. Louise Hobt, 82, of Dayton, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Dayton. Her husband, Charles L. Hobt, died in 1981. A daughter, Barbara Woosley, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Dennis Hobt of Bellevue; a daughter, Sheryl Kues of Newport; a brother, Jack Bryson of Laguna Beach, Calif.; a sister, Jewldine Farquar of Apopka, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the cemetery chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Palmer E. Ledonne, 81, of Crestview Hills, died Wednesday at his home.
He was vice president of John Nolan Ford, a member of St Pius X Church, Edgewood, a volunteer at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, and World War II veteran of the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret H. Ledonne of Crestview Hills; a daughter, Jennifer Bodkin of Edgewood; sons, Stephen Ledonne of Cincinnati and Philip Ledonne of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Marion Ledonne of Cincinnati; a sister, Delores Ray of Louisville; and 10 grandchildren.

J.B. Raisor, 73, of Williamstown, died at 6:05 a.m. Friday at Villa Spring Health Care Center, Erlanger.

Ruth E. Smith, 82, of Evanston, Cincinnati, died Thursday at St. Margaret Hall, Evanston.
She was a retired hairdresser and a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Newport. Her husband, Arthur J. Smith, died in 1964.
Survivors include daughters, Sandra Sue Frommeyer of Burlington and Patricia Gibson of Florence; a son, Arthur Robert Smith of Edgewood; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Peggy S. Taylor, 80 of Cincinnati, formerly of Latonia, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a former receptionist with Dr. Fagedes and Dr. Garrity, Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia, and Cheviot, Ohio, Eagles Women's Auxiliary. Her husband, Leslie A. Taylor, died in 1985.
Survivors include her daughters, Lois Ross of Cincinnati and Jan DeBuyser of Independence; a brother, Jerry C. Held of Florida; and a grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
