Lillian Hughes, 73, ran popular ice cream stand
For nearly a quarter of a century, Lillian C. Hughes and her husband, Ben, operated an ice cream stand/restaurant that was Independence's de facto community center.
In the days before shopping centers and restaurants sprouted to serve burgeoning subdivisions, their Dari Crme restaurant dished out soft-serve ice cream, homemade chili and barbecue, and was a favorite after-school hangout for students from nearby Simon Kenton High School and Kenton Elementary School.
"It was a pretty popular place, " said Mrs. Hughes' daughter, Joyce Rogers of Independence. "There wasn't anything else out here at the time."
Mrs. Hughes, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth South in Edgewood. She was 73.
The Dari Crme was more than a gathering place for young people. The sympathetic ear the Hugheses provided and their good home cooking attracted adults and families.
"It was a socializing place, a place where people went to talk about their problems, " Rogers said. "I think that was one of the things that kept Mom and Dad at it - they enjoyed talking to people, they cared about their customers. And they liked working with each other."
Ben Hughes died in 1983 and his widow operated the restaurant with the help of her children and grandchildren before finally selling it in 1989.
In retirement, she lavished attention on her grandchildren.
"She was a good, Christian woman who cared a lot about other people, " Rogers said. "A lot of people thought the world of her."
Mrs. Hughes was a member of Nicholson Christian Church.
