Margaret Popovich loved sports, and helping others
Margaret Louise Popovich's passion for athletics was responsible for her meeting the man who would become her husband.
Mrs. Popovich, who played on an amateur softball team called the Cold Spring Kittens and for a Covington brewery team, was jumping rope one day in 1940 outside the Blair Saloon, on Licking Pike in Wilder, when Paul Popovich saw her and decided to join her.
He told her he was older than she was - he was actually four years younger - and she didn't find out until he received his draft notice months later, said their daughter, Shelley Buechel, of Seattle, Wash.
They married, raised six children and were wed for 55 years, until her death Wednesday at age 84 at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Popovich was active her whole life, her family said. As a girl, she walked nearly five miles to school every day from her home on Lincoln Pike in rural Campbell County, where she lived with relatives who took her in after her father died during the flu epidemic of 1918, when she was nine months old.
After she married, she helped her husband build their home on Winters Lane in Cold Spring, even digging ditches for the sewer line, Paul Popovich said. They moved in in 1953 and spent their entire marriage there.
At St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring. Mrs. Popovich helped guide the construction of the church baseball field.
After her husband retired, they started two senior citizens' clubs, and guided senior tours to Europe, Canada, Hawaii and Alaska.
"She was a great person, " Paul Popovich said. "She just wanted to help everybody, down through the years."
