Henry Fedders, homebuilder
Henry L. Fedders Sr. had a reputation for building quality homes - and quality exemplified other aspects of his life, too.
Mr. Fedders, 84, of Florence, who died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington, taught himself how to build houses and became one of the Florence area's first homebuilders through Fedders Builders.
He built his first house, on Lynn Street in Florence, for his sister-in-law and her husband.
He built hundreds of custom-built homes before he retired in 1985, earning a reputation for quality. One real estate agent would tell customers, "This is a Fedders home, " said Mr. Fedders' son, Henry L. Fedders Jr. of Walton.
"He took great pride in his work. Whenever he built anything, it was really solid, and he backed it up with great personal service, " said another son, Richard L. Fedders of Ipswich, England.
Mr. Fedders was a charter member of the Northern Kentucky Home Builders Association, created in 1955.
He was one of eight children born to Henry and Barbara Fedders of Crescent Springs. He married
Frieda Graue, also of Crescent Springs, in 1942. They moved to a farm in Richwood in 1978, where he raised cattle. Mr. Fedders' other hobbies included fishing, wood carpentry, welding and traveling.
A member of St. Paul Church in Florence from 1946 until his death, he was also one of the church's first eucharistic ministers, Henry Fedders Jr. said.
He served in that capacity until poor health forced him to stop about five years ago, his son said, which was a great disappointment to him.
Richard Fedders described his father as a quiet man who always said if you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything at all.
