Opal Collins, former deputy sheriff
Opal Collins managed to combine an array of unlikely roles in her life, beginning as a Gallatin County farm girl, then growing up to mother five children while serving as one of the first women in the Boone County Sheriff's Department.
Through it all, she served as a stellar example for her children and community, her family said.
"She was very devoted religiously, " said Mrs. Collins' eldest son, Melvin Keith Collins of Taylor Mill.
"She never smoked a day in her life. She never drank a day in her life. And I never heard her cuss a word in her life.
"She was just a sweet lady."
Mrs. Collins, 77, of Erlanger, died Friday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.
She was with the Boone County Sheriff's Department for 15 years, beginning in 1958, and served as a Boone County deputy sheriff from 1962-66 and 1970-74.
Her family said she was largely responsible for tax collection duties as a deputy and was never on active patrol duty.
Her late husband, Melvin R. Collins, served as Boone County sheriff from 1970 to 1974. He died in 1977. A daughter, Melva K. Collins, died in 1995.
Mrs. Collins was a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church in Union and loved to crochet.
Other survivors include a son, Mike Collins of Gallatin County; daughters, Patricia Walker of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Karen Barstow of Ventura, Calif.; sisters, Wilma Perkins of Owenton and Frances Shinkle of Gallatin County; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery, Gallatin County.

Eleanor Pangallo Baioni, 73, of Alexandria, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Altar Society. Her husband, Reno R. Baioni Sr., died in 1990.
Survivors include her daughters, Diane Hightchew and Tina Mason, both of Alexandria; sons, Ray Baioni of Cincinnati, David Baioni of Fort Thomas and Reno Baioni Jr. of Cold Spring; sisters, Catherine Marino of Richmond, Ind., Sue Zimmerman of Newport and Carmella Sena of Highland Heights; brothers, Marco Pangallo of Milford, Ohio, Roy Pangallo of Cincinnati and Tony Pangallo and Fortunato Pangallo, both of Newport; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Norbert A. "Beck" Beckerich, 78, of Alexandria, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired tool and die maker for Ford Motor Co., Batavia, Ohio, and a member of Bishop Mulloy Council Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Forresters, St. Mary Church in Alexandria, and United Auto Workers Union.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Jean Gebelt Beckerich; a son, James Beckerich of Plano, Texas; a sister, Victoria Walsh of Highland Heights; and a grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Mary Church. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

James B. Deaton, 67, of Newport, died at 2:35 p.m. Friday at his home.
He was a retired warehouse wholesaler with Gries Brothers, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Maude Deaton; a daughter, Evelyn Bryant of Newport; sons, Gary Deaton of Newport and Warren Deaton of Foster; a brother, Earl Deaton of Newport; sisters, Juanita Neace of Claryville, Hele Truschel of Alexandria and Ada Hoskins of Busy; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Fern M. Farrar, 92, of Silver Grove, died Friday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of Siver Bells and Bows Seniors of Silver Grove and Christ Church United Churh of Christ, Fort Thomas. Her husband, William Farrar, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Willa Crowder of Silver Grove; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Martha I. Grimm, 99, of Massillon, Ohio, formerly of Southgate, died Thursday at Aultman Hospital, Canton, Ohio.
She was a homemaker and a hospital volunteer. Her husband, William Grimm, died in 1971, and a son, William Grimm, died in 1980.
Survivors include her daughter, Martha Jane Stoner of Jackson Township, Ohio; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Heitger Funeral Home, Jackson Chapel, Massillon. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Massillon.

James Ricky Hampton, 46, of Erlanger, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday at his home.
He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Denise Hampton; daughters, Tina Hampton and Dawn Hampton, both of Erlanger; sons, Jonathon Hampton of Cincinnati and Joshua Hampton and James R. Hampton Jr., both of Erlanger; a brother, Cris Hampton of Mount Healthy, Ohio; sisters, Marilyn Sylvester of Valrico, Fla., and Sheila Thomas of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Gerald H. Meier, 87, of Latonia, died Thursday at his home.
He was a retired meat cutter for Albers Supermarket and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. His first wife, Marion Berning Meier, died in 1949, and his second wife, Evelyn Louise Foley Meier, died in 1989.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Coleman of Cold Spring and Janet Harper of Taylor Mill; sons, Jerry B. Meier of Louisville, Mike Meier of Covington, Mark Meier of Villa Hills and Tom Meier of Cincinnati; brothers, Matt Meier of Palo Alto, Calif., and Richard Meier of Fort Thomas; sisters, Margaret Crout of Independence, Catherine Hedges of California, Jean House of Villa Hills, Rita Kennedy of Covington and Ginny Broshardt of Long Island, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

James M. Tingle, 75, of Walton, died Friday at his home.
He was on the chief management staff with the Internal Revenue Service, Cincinnati, and was a veteran of the Merchant Marine, Army and Air Force; he served in World War II and the Korean War. A daughter, Gail Tingle Smith, died in 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanetta "Polly" Tingle; a daughter, Judith Tingle Stancel of Burlington; sons, Jeffrey Warren Tingle of Verona and James M. Tingle Jr. of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a sister, Elinor Schumacher of Alpharetta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
