Arthur Sarakatsannis, 88, restaurant owner
Arthur T. Sarakatsannis, 88, of Newport, who came to America from Greece and started a popular chili parlor in Newport, died Friday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.
Mr. Sarakatsannis opened the Crystal Chili Parlor in the 1940s and the restaurant remained a popular attraction until he retired about 20 years ago.
"People waited in lines to get in, " said Mr. Sarakatsannis' daughter, Mary Quill of Fort Thomas. "The chili parlor would close for several weeks in the summer and people were always banging on the door, wondering how soon it was going to re-open."
Mr. Sarakatsannis never revealed his secret recipe for thick, hearty Greek chili.
"Not even to his family, " said Mrs. Quill. "We asked him to give the recipe to us, but he never did. The recipe died with him."
Mrs. Quill said her father was a sociable, generous person.
"When people were too poor to pay for their chili, he fed them for free, " she said. "And he literally gave people the coat off his back. In winter, if a poor person didn't have a coat, he would give away his coat.
"He loved socializing. He would talk to any one, any time, any where. He was very outgoing and very personable."
