Madeliene Bonar, needle-worker

The first language that Liliane Madeliene Auzanneau Bonar and Ronald Bonar shared was love.

That had to do until the American G.I. took French languages classes and his new bride taught herself English - mostly by watching television soap operas.

The two met while Bonar was stationed in France with the Army and married in 1955. They settled in Bonar's native Northern Kentucky after he retired from the Army in 1969.

"When we met, she knew three words of English: `yes, ' `no' and `OK, ' " Bonar said of his wife, who died Wednesday at their home in Newport. She was 70.

Mrs. Bonar, who survived the Nazi occupation of France as a teen-ager - at one point the Germans used her mother's home for their headquarters - was an exceptional needle-worker.

She knitted baby clothes, sweaters, shawls and afghans for friends and family.

"For awhile, anyone who had a new baby, she would knit them a baby set, " said her husband.

She continued to crochet and make fine needlework quilts until several months before her death.

"She was an inspiration to her family, friends and acquaintances, " said her husband. "She possessed a wealth of knowledge and talents."

For the past year, Mrs. Bonar attended Plum Creek Christian Church, Grants Lick.
