Herbert Fuest, 'liked to have a good time'
His wife will remember Herbert H. Fuest for his intelligence, his generosity and his zest for life.
"He was definitely one of a kind, " Cindy Ann Harris-Fuest said. "He was outgoing and wild. He liked to have a good time."
Mr. Fuest, of Crescent Springs, died Tuesday of liver disease at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was 55.
Mr. Fuest was born in Germany, where he studied the culinary arts and baking in college.
"Herb loved people and he loved to cook for them, " his wife said.
He liked most to prepare Cajun dishes such as gumbo, jambalaya or red beans and rice. He added those recipes to his repertoire when he lived in New Orleans and worked for Delta Airlines as a baggage claim specialist.
He later transferred to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and settled in Northern Kentucky.
There, about 11 years ago, he met his wife, whom he impressed with his kindness.
He knew a lot about history, especially medieval history, and could tell her ahead of time how the historical movies they watched would end.
He spoke several languages, and served as an interpreter at the airport, Ms. Harris-Fuest said.
Mr. Fuest became sick with pancreatic tumors three years ago, soon after he retired from Delta Airlines.
Shortly before he died, his wife, said, he "just told me he loved me and to live my life - live it up, " she said.
Mr. Fuest was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and also served in Korea.
Other survivors include a daughter, Heidi Fuest of Metairie, La.; a son, Erich Fuest of Chalmette, La.; a stepson, James Harris of Crescent Springs; a stepdaughter, Lisa Hilligoss of Independence; his mother, Toni Grothaus of Berlin, Germany; brothers, Klaus Peter Fuest of Germany and Frank Grothaus of Berlin, Germany; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Cremation will be in Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the American Liver Foundation, 5755 Granger Road, Suite 335, Independence, Ohio, 44131-1455.
Helen D. Cate, 86, of Fort Thomas, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.
She was a sales clerk for Cathedral Religious Store, Covington, and a member of St. Ann's Society. A son, Jerome Cate, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara J. Aichele of Cincinnati and Carolyn S. Menning of Dayton; a son, Cecil Cate Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Melvin Brauer of Fort Mitchell; a sister, May Roenker of Bellevue; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home Chapel, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Wanda L. Crawford, 62, of Newport, died at 12:56 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Spirit Church, Newport.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Crawford; a daughter, Paula Schmidt of Newport; sons, Bobby Crawford of Covington, Scotty Crawford of Bellevue and Gregory Crawford of Newport; mother, Mary Bickers of Newport; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Eugenia "Granny" Fuller, 83, of Covington, died at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a sales clerk with F.W. Woolworth Co., Covington. Her husband, George L. Fuller, died in 1992 and a son, Robert Fuller, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, Donald Fuller of Covington; brother, Billy Wiggins of Cynthiana; sisters, Margaret Stroub, Allene Wade and Mary Stroub, all of Cynthiana; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Catherine H. Haunert, 81, of Loxahatchee, Fla., formerly of Newport and Dayton, died Monday at Hospice of West Palm Beach, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of Incarnation Church, Sarasota, Fla. Her husband, Gene Haunert, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Haunert of Loxahatchee; a daughter, Joy Haunert of Dacula, Ga.; a sister, Betty Markins of Fairfield, Ohio; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Gulf Gate Chapel, Sarasota. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sarasota Memorial Park, Sarasota.
Joyce Jeanette Hoover, 72, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at Columbia Health Care Center, Cincinnati. She was homemaker.
Survivors include her aunt, Dottie Bruce.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Greensburg Cemetery, Green, Ohio.
James Ingram Jr., 80, of London, formerly of Williamstown, died Tuesday at Corbin Nursing Home. He was a bartender, a former maintenance worker for the Grant County schools and an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Ingram.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Conn Ingram; sons, Dennis Ingram of Hebron, Doug Ingram of Mansfield, Ohio, and Mike Moore of Williamstown; a daughter, Deborah Fritts of Covington; a sister, Merlie Ingram of Jackson County; a brother, Troy Ingram of London; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Klee, 75, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Rosedale Manor, Covington. She was a member of Powersville Baptist Church, Brooksville. Her first husband, Eugene Fronk, died in 1984.
Survivors include her husband, William Carton "W.C." Klee; daughters, Judy Brothers of Brooksville, Melody Byrd of Independence and Jeanine Brown of Denver, Iowa; a son, Joe Klee of Covington; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Helen Green Lowrance, 78, of Frankfort, formerly of Sparta, died Tuesday at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. She was a retired fiscal officer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky Cabinet of Economic Development, a member of Crestwood Baptist Church, Crestwood Church's Young at Heart senior adult group and bowling league, and served on the Frankfort Parks and Recreation Board.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Lowrance Goodman of Frankfort; brothers, Neville Green of Florence and Woodrow Green of Walton; a sister, Geneva Phillips of Erlanger; two granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; and two step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Crestwood Baptist Church, Frankfort. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Clark-Sunset Funeral Home, Frankfort, and from noon until time of services Friday at the church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Frankfort.
Agnes Ione Patterson, 70, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. A son, Robert Patterson, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Larry Patterson of Florence and John Patterson of Newport, daughters, Francis Wiles of California, Lana Thornton of Dry Ridge and Gladys Patterson and Rosemary Akers, both of Newport; a brother, Bailes Adkins of St. Albans, W.Va.; a sister Louise Paul, of St Albans; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Elgin B. Rankin, 89, of Sharpsburg, died Tuesday at Mary Chiles Hospital, Mount Sterling. He was a retired barber and a member of Bethel Methodist Church and Bath Lodge No. 55. His first wife, Frances Carpenter Rankin, and a daughter, Janice Rankin, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Harris Graham Rankin; daughters, Julia Grimm and Joyce Ploeger, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Brooks Rankin of Flemingsburg; sisters, Virginia Patrick of Richmond and Muriel Pucciarelli of Marion, Ind.; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

William Clay Smith, 69, of Union, formerly of Gallatin County, died Tuesday at Veterans Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a farmer and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his daughter, Ruby Robinson of Union; a son, Billy Ray Smith of Carrollton; a brother, Richard "Dicky" Smith of Carrollton; a sister, Rosemary McCormick of Carrollton; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Raymond Vastine Stahl, 81, of Ellensburg, Wash., formerly of Pendleton County, died Sunday at his home. He was a farmer and a veteran of the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Stahl; a son, Thomas Stahl of Ellensburg; sisters, Clarice Fronk of Erlanger and Mona Faye Crowley of Covington; and brothers, Herman Stahl of Florida, Donald Stahl of Covington, Leo Stahl of Crittenden and Gene Stahl of Demossville.
There will be no services or visitation.

Harold B. Stewart, 73, of Crittenden, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at his son's home in Fort Wright.

Mary Ellen Strasinger, 85, of Mount Orab, Ohio, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired press operator for Plastic Molding Corp., Cincinnati, and a member of New Life Ministries, Newport. Her husband, Paul Strasinger Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Jeanine Cussins of Mount Orab and Gloria Laemmle of Newport; a son, Paul Strasinger Jr. of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
