Virginia Currin, daughter of funeral home director

Virginia Swindler Currin was a wonderful, caring mother who loved life, said her son, Ed Currin Jr. of Edgewood.

Mrs. Currin, who died Sunday, graduated from the University of Cincinnati, but never worked outside the home. "She believed in raising our family and creating a good home environment, " her son said.

While in college, she joined Kappa Kappa Gam ma sorority, and remained a proud member for more than 50 years.

Some of her large circle of friends came from the sorority, Ed said, as well as from her social contacts playing bridge and golf. She was a longtime member of the Summit Hills Country Club.

She loved to cook, and her favorite was an old family recipe called a "Brownstone Front, " a sweet cake with buttercreme icing.

Her late parents, T.M. and Viola Swindler, started the Swindler and Currin Funeral Home in 1914. Her granddaughters, Jennifer Robinson and Stephanie Hisle, both licensed funeral directors, now work there with their father, Ed.

Mrs. Currin, 87, of Erlanger, formerly of Park Hills, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday at Village Care Center in Erlanger. She was a member of Latonia Baptist Church. Her husband, Edward N. Currin, died in 1987.

Other survivors include Tom Currin of Villa Hills; a sister, Betty Stidham of Fort Wright; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Latonia Baptist Church Building Fund, 3800 Church St., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Robert J. Averdick, 78, of Covington, died at 12:20 a.m. Friday at Mary Rose Mission in Covington. He was a sales manager with Hanser Brothers and owner of Bob Averdick Furniture and Appliance. He was a member of Mother of God Church, Disabled American Veterans, Opalocka, Fla., VFW Post No. 8193, and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was active with St. Julie's School in Uganda.

Survivors include sons, Mike Averdick of Covington, Steve Averdick and Joe Averdick, both of Fort Wright, Gary Averdick of Ryland Heights, and Bill Averdick of Villa Hills; a brother, Tom Averdick of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Sue Behle of Crescent Springs; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Prince of Peace School, 625 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011; Mary Rose Mission, 1543 Russell S t., Covington, Ky. 41011; or St. Julie School, in care of Sisters of Notre Dame, 1601 Dixie Hwy., Park Hills, Ky. 41011.

Zelphia Brewer Baker Ballard, 70, of Owenton, died Thursday at Owenton Manor. She was a former owner of Ballard Service Station in Owenton and a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Jeff Baker of Owenton; brothers, Orville Brewer of Harrogate, Tenn., and Nick Brewer of Ludlow; sisters, Mae Sullivan of Fort Thomas, and Diana Wendroth of Dry Ridge; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Victory Independent Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Doris Martin Beers, 85, of Edgewood, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday in Erlanger.

She was a homemaker and a member of Erlanger Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Walter B. Beers; a son, James W. Beers of Park Hills; a daughter, Mary Jo Budig of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Donald Martin of Ind ependence; a sister, Josephine Ecklar of Corinth; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begi n there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Erlanger Christian Church, 25 Graves Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Maxine Wilson Berry, 84, of Erlanger, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired medical record librarian with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Raymond J. Berry, died May 25.< p> Survivors include sons, Alan Berry of Springfield, Va., Dr. David Berry of Edgewood, and Scott Berry of Florence; a brother, George Wilson of Johnson City, Tenn.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Michael Anthony Brooks, 43, of Dayton, died Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a coach driver with Queen City Metro, Cincinnati, and a Dayton city councilman. He was a union steward with ATU Local No. 27, a volunteer with Newport Central Catholic High School and a little league baseball and soccer coach.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Brooks; daughters, Angel Brooks and Maria Brooks, both of Dayton; sons, Kevin Brooks and Mike Brooks, both of Dayton; his mother, Florence Brooks of Dayton; brothers, David B rooks of Highland Heights and Steve Brooks of Dayton; and sisters, Florence Schweinger and Sandy Wier, both of Bellevue, Debbie Smith of Newport, Donna Thornton of Florence, Rose Myers of Fort Thomas, and Theresa Ilg, Rita Kappess, Joyce Matthews and Linda Scott, all of Dayton.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Mike Brooks Benefit Fund, in care of Fifth Third Bank, Bellevue, 240 Fairfield Ave., Bellevue, Ky. 41073. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.

Frances E. Brewton Edwards, 80, of Fort Wright, died at 1:48 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a former secretary with Union Central Life Insurance Co. and a member of First Baptist Church, Ludlow. Her husband, Clestal C. Edward, died in 1997.

Survivors include sons, W.L. Edwards of West Chester, Ohio, and Robert "Steve" Edwards of Covington; a sister, Joyce Hill of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation w ill be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Robert A. Hinzman, 73, of Covington, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday at his home.

He was a carpenter with Kelensch and Building Crafts and a member of St. Augustine Holy Name Society and Pathfinders. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Hinzman of Covington; sons, Robert Hinzman of San Diego, Joseph and Michael Hinzman, both of Cincinnati, and Richard Hinzman of Florence; daughters, Cindy Goetz of Florence, Debby Heller of Raleigh, N.C., Mary Smith of Taylor Mill, Patty Wilken of Cincinnati, Jane Scanlon of Keyport, Wash., Donna Bethge of Huntington, Md., and Sandy Hinzman of San Diego; a sister, Virginia Garvey of Silver Spring, Md.; a brother, Larry Hinzman of Rock Island, Ill.; and 22 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 tonight at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Catchen Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Victor M. Holderby, 94, of Florence died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a retired traffic manager with Litton Industries, Florence, a past president of Erlanger Lions a nd a member of Pinecrest Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, N.C. He was a former umpire with Dixie Area Knothole Baseball. His wife, Dorothy Fisher Holderby, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy H. Ferguson of Fort Wright; sons, Michael Holderby of Gardnerville, Nev., and Raymond A. Holderby of Florence; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Cremat ory, Milford, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

John H. Johnson, 77, of Covington, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday at his home.

He was a shuttle bus driver with Dollar Rent-A-Car and a former truck driver with Kentucky Motors Inc. He was a member of Latonia American Legion Post No. 304.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Williams Johnson; a son, Jeff Johnson of Cincinnati; daughters, Lois Dianna Johnson of Covington, Penny Jeffers and Linda Johnson, both of Cincinnati; stepsons, Paul Williams and Mark Williams, both of Covington, and Jerry Williams of Erlanger; a brother, E. T. "Dutch" Johnson of Alabama; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation wi ll be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Michael Albert Kappes, 50, of Alexandria, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired technician with Proctor and Gamble, Cincinnati, a former member of the Flying Aces, a member of Alexandria Community Band, the Army Reserve Band, a ham radio operator with Campbell County Disaster Management during the Beverly Hills Fire and 1997 Falmouth flood.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Kappes; a stepdaughter, Karen LeForce of Fort Thomas; stepsons, Chris Zinkhon of Alexandria, and Tom Zinkhon of Wilder; sisters, Linda Ackman of Amelia, Ohio, and Cynthia Burns of New Richmond, Ohio; brothers, George Kappes and Steven A. Kappes, both of Moscow, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 745 W. Main Street, Louisville, Ky. 40202.

Edna C. Kleymeyer, 96, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Charles Care Center, Covin gton. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John Church, Covington. Her husband, Edward Kleymeyer, died in 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Kleymeyer of Covington; a son, John "Jack" Kleymeyer of Crescent Springs; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Church, Covington. Burial w ill be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. John Church, 627 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Donna Elaine Hutton Laney, 49, of Covington, died Friday at her home. She was an employee of The Gap, a member of Keturah Street Church of God, Newport, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Covington.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Laney; sons, Steven Ware II and Randy Ware, both of Covington; a daughter, Heather Ware of Covington; her father and stepmother, Theodore "Ted" and Charlotte Hutton of Corbin; brothers, Theodore Hutton and Bill Hutton, both of Covington, Jim Hutton of Charleston, S.C., Ray Robert, James and Steve Hutton, all of Jacksonville, Fla., Donald, Gary and Kenny Hutton, all of Corbin; sisters, Sharon Pohlman of Covington, and Della Hartman, Joella Hollingsworth and Linda Lawson, all of Corbin; and four grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Corbin Funeral Home. Burial was in Brafford Cemetery, Corbin.

Ralph A. McCarthy, 71, of Cold Spring, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired electrician with Cincinnati Gas & Electric, Cincinnati, and a member of Bellevue Vets and American Legion Post No. 153. His wife, Delores McCarthy, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane McCarthy of Portland, Ore.; sons, Steve McCarthy of Davenport, Fla., and Jeff McCarthy of California; a sister, June Cosner of Kalispel, Montana; seven grandchildren and 10 g reat-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mamie Evans Miller, 86, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Baptist Conval escent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James Miller, died in 1981. A son, Barney Randolph Miller, died in 1993.

Survivors include daughters, Eileen Wallingford of Fort Thomas, and Janice Marshall of Middletown, Ohio; a son, John David Miller of Alexandria; sisters, Edna Harley, Jenny Devine and Eudell Evans, all of Springfi eld; brothers, Jeff Evans of Michigan and Roy Evans of Sunbury, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Bessie Eads Reynolds, 92, of Walton, died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday at Woodspoint Health C are Center, Florence. She was a former seamstress with Hyde Park Clothing Co., Newport, and Baldwin Piano Co. in Cincinnati, and was a member of Heritage Assembly of God, Florence. Her husband, Mitchell Troy Reynolds, died in 1976.

Survivors include a sister, Goldie Schrader of Fort Thomas, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Owen County.

Al Wayne Scroggins, 55, of Dry Ridge, died Saturday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.

Ariel Keesh Stanton, 11 days, daughter of Marty W. and Ayano Stanton of Goldsboro, N .C., died Sunday in Japan.

Other survivors include a sister, Alicia Stanton of Goldsboro; and grandparents, Paula Stanton of Florence, and Sachika and Seiyu Inafuku of Japan.

Graveside services will be at noon Tuesday at Paint Lick Cemetery, Warsaw. Visitation will be gin there at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the cemetery. Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling arrangements.

Frank Edward Wells, 31, of Ludlow, died Saturday at his sister's home in Ludlow. He was a window cleaner with Braco Windows, Wilder.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Wells; sons, Logan Wells and Anthony Wells, both at home; a daughter, Sara Wells, at home; his mother and stepfather, Debra and Timothy Elbert of Covington; and a sister, Jodi Cooper of Ludlow.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Johns Hill Cemetery, Wilder.

Albert Paul Welzel, 85, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was an assistant brewmaster with Bavarian Brewery and an employee of Cincinnati Milacron. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park and Masonic Lodge No. 746 in Latonia, and was a boy scout leader with Troop No. 2, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet Welzel; daughters, Elaine Caldwell and Kathy O'Brien, both of Burlington, Nancy Million of Berry, Lori Finn of Verona and Linda Hartman of Villa Hills; sons, Jonathan Welzel of Verona and Matthew Welzel of Verona; a brother, Fred Welzel of Florence; a sister, Betty Richie of Northville, Mich.; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
