Glenna Watson, 71, owned bait and tackle business
Glenna Andrews Watson, owner of Laton ia Bait and Tackle, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. She was 71.
Mrs. Watson was a dental hygienist in Covington when she met Edward Watson, an avid fisherman who owned a bait shop in Walton.
"Mom didn't like bugs or worms, but when they started going together they went night crawler hunting, " said her daughter, Carol Breeze. "She wore white gloves to catch worms - she was afraid of them."
The fear faded quickly. The Watsons married
in 1962, moved to Latonia and opened Latonia Bait and Tackle next door. Mrs. Watson had been divorced with six children when she remarried; the new family quickly grew to eight, said Mrs. Breeze.
"She loved to go fishing and she enjoyed people - she enjoyed her customers, " said Mrs. Bre eze, who now runs the shop with her husband, Dennis.
Mrs. Watson kept a flower garden, played pinochle with friends on Sundays and reveled in her grandchildren. She often could be found fishing, in baseball cap and shorts, on the banks of the South Fork of the Licking River and at favorite ponds and creeks.
Her husband died in 1983. She continued to run the bait shop until 1996, when her daughter and son-in-law took over.
"Even after she retired, she would come over and talk to the customers, " Mrs. Breeze said. "They'd call and invite her to go fishing with them."
Mrs. Watson had a stroke and a heart attack two weeks ago. "She was in rehab and was looking forward to coming home, " her daughter said. She visited her mother Thursday night and got a call from the hospital about 3 a.m. Friday. "She just went to sleep and quit breathing, " Mrs. Breeze said.
