Roger Klein, longtime tennis coach at NKU, Bellevue High

Roger G. Klein carried a list of goals in his wallet, which he looked at every night in the belief that he could make them come true.

At the top of the list was "To be a good person, " said his granddaughter, Cindy Simpson of Alexandria.

Family and friends think that Klein, who died Sunday in his 90th year at his home in Alexandria, succeeded.

Everyone treated him like gold -- and they should have, former student and Bellevue resident Rob Hardin said.

Mr. Klein influenced generations of children for the better through coaching tennis, Hardin said.

He compiled a 419-98 record as coach at Bellevue High School, then went on to coach the Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team to a 72-63 record and the men's team to a 114-102 record.

In 1986, his NKU team won a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, the first GLVC title for a men's program at the university.

He became a second father to many of his students, Hardin said. As Bellevue High's truant officer, he would make troubled kids into tennis players so he could keep an eye on them, he added.

Mr. Klein was a member of the Northern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky University and Kentucky sports halls of fame, and the University of Kentucky Alumni Association. He was also a member of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association.

Mr. Klein tried, but couldn't teach his granddaughter how to play the game.

"He wanted me to be another Chrissie Evert, but I didn't have it in me, " Simpson said.
