Patricia McDermott, had CF, 'never let illness stop her'
Patricia Ann McDermott did not let cystic fibrosis rule her life.
She lived with zest and enthusiasm, raising three sons, working, and volunteering.
Mrs. McDermott, 51, of Villa Hills, died Friday at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
"When she was young, CF patients were not given much of a life span. But she never let her illness stop her from doing anything, " said her sister, Jan Schipper of Edgewood.
"Her determination and her happiness in living was evident in everything she did."
Mrs. McDermott met her husband, Timothy, at the University of Kentucky Community College.
They married
and had three sons.
Mrs. McDermott worked as a CPR instructor for St. Elizabeth Medical Center and the American Red Cross.
She was a volunteer at the Parish Kitchen in Covington, serving meals to homeless and low-income families.
When her sons were at Covington Catholic High School, she chaired the student retreat and was a member of the Football Mothers Club.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs.
"She was always doing something for somebody else, " her sister said. "She was friendly and outgoing, and liked to make people laugh.
"She knew how to make people feel at ease."
Cystic fibrosis affects breathing.
"There's a lot of coughing, " Ms. Schipper said.
But she didn't let that get in the way of living.
"If we went hiking, she went hiking with us, " Ms. Schipper said. "She didn't try to hide her disease, but she didn't call attention to it. It was something to deal with and then go on with life."
Other survivors include her husband, Timothy McDermott; sons, Kevin McDermott of Nederland, Colo., Patrick McDermott of Knoxville, Tenn., and Brian McDermott of Villa Hills; her mother, Kay Cassidy of Fort Wright; and a sister, Carol Robinson of Atlanta, Ga.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Porter Ray Atwood, 83, of Newport, died at 12:16 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired machinist for Lunkenheimer Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Mary McDyer Atwood; daughters, Rosemary Broughton of Newport and Bonnie Parrish of Wilder; sons, James Atwood of Ludlow and George Atwood and Kenny Atwood, both of Newport; sisters, Daisy Atwood of Crescent Springs, Eula Hayden of Sacramento, Calif., and Beulah Stanford of Cincinnati; a brother, Clyde Atwood of El Paso, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Eleanor Paula Lewis Bagby, 85, of Fairfield, Iowa, formerly of Latonia, died at 5:50 a.m. Friday at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield.
She was a homemaker and a member of Latonia Christian Church.
Her husband, William Morgan Bagby died in 1976, and a daughter, Connie Treadway, died in 1997.
Survivors include her daughter, Cara Perkins of Fairfield and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

cent F. Fischesser, 77, of Highland Heights, formerly of Cincinnati, died at 5:44 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a sheet metal worker for Local No. 24 Sheet Metal Union.
He was a member of and the Knights of Columbus at St. Michaels Church, Sharonville, Ohio.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

Louis N. Kautzman Jr., 88, of Florence, died Thursday at Florence Park Care Center.
He was a retired lithographer for K&A; Litho, Kansas City, Mo., and an Army veteran of World W ar II.
Survivors include his wife, Corrine A. Kautzman; a daughter, Cynthia Sue Smith of Lakeside Park; and a grandson.
A memorial service will be at the convenience of the family.
Cremation will be in Fares J. Radel Funeral Home and Crematory, Cincinnati.
Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati, Newport, is handling arrangements.
Grace Fornash Perkins, 88, of Williamstown, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.
She was a seamstress for McGregor, machine operator for Mehl Manufacturing and order processor with Square D, Florence, and a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Her husband, J.C. Perkins, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, Glenn E. Perkins of Dry Ridge; a sister, Alda Marksberry of Williamstown; brothers, Harry Fornash of Williamstown ad Clint Fornash of Taylor Mill; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
