John Ira Gray Jr., 81, noted in agriculture
The chances are good that if you worked in agriculture in Kenton or Boone counties during the latter half of the 20th century, you knew John Ira Gray Jr.
Mr. Gray, who died Saturday, trained agriculture students for the Kenton County Schools for 30 years. He also made measurements on local farms for the federal government's tobacco program.
"I imagine he (knew) more people in Kenton and Boone County than any person alive, " said his son, Michael, of Florence.
Mr. Gray served with distinction in the Army during World War II, earning a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star. But he modestly never mentioned those honors in a program about the war that appeared on local cable television, his son said.
After the war, Mr. Gray married
the former Jeanett Renaker, whom he had met in the second grade. They remained married
for 56 years, until her death in May.
The same year he was married, Mr. Gray joined the Walton United Methodist Church, where he would serve as a Sunday school teacher and a voluntary missionary.
"He was very faithful to his church and to his lord, " said his longtime friend, Dr. J.M. Huey of Walton.
After he retired from the Kenton school system, Mr. Gray continued to substitute teach at the Northern Kentucky Youth Development Center until he died, his son said.
He also collected and dealt in antiques, and played bridge regularly, Huey said.
"He was a very forceful individual, very determined in what he wanted to do, " Huey said.
