Maurice Eichholz, 89, World War II veteran
Maurice Eichholz didn't say much about his horrific experiences as a World War II prisoner for six months in Europe.
But his family believes that period scarred the Northern Kentucky man, who lived a very quiet life after returning home.
Mr. Eichholz, who retired as a security guard after 20 years at the Taft Museum of Art, died Wednesday at Florence Park Care Center. He was 89.
A burial with military honors is being arranged for Saturday morning, something his family considers particularly appropriate because of his sacrifices.
"That'll be real good for him. He was really proud of that, " a cousin, Mike Wehry of Union, said about Mr. Eichholz's service with the U.S. Army's 99th Infantry Division.
"I do think that the war really did him in - made him a wreck inside, " said another cousin, Joe Wehry of Erlanger.
Mr. Eichholz was outwardly friendly and pleasant, but a loner, Joe Wehry said. But it would have been hard not to be affected by some of his experiences, Wehry added.
"He was probably one of the most courteous people you would ever meet, " Mike Wehry said.
Mr. Eichholz, an alumnus of Holy Cross High School in Latonia, saw particularly harrowing duty during the Battle of the Bulge, where friends died around him during weeks of heavy German attack, Joe Wehry said. After they were captured, Mr. Eichholz and other troops were locked in boxcars, with food dropped into them, the cousins said.
His family believes the lack of food during his captivity may explain why the generous man lived almost a miserly existence.
Mr. Eichholz, a member of the former St. Ann's Church in Ludlow, attended some family functions, but had to be drawn out to contribute to conversations, Joe Wehry said.
"He wasn't a basket case, but he was obviously affected by that experience, " the cousin added. "He was a good soul."
