Wanda Lou Simms Izquierdo, 62

Wanda Lou Simms Izquierdo used her energy, her personality and her heart to build her husband's medical practice and their family.

She was his partner and confidante and friend, said their son, Tony.

"She was the glue that held everything together."

Mrs. Izquierdo died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was 62. Mrs. Izquierdo met Dr. Albert G. Izquierdo when he was her mother's doctor at the former Booth Hospital in Covington. She was still a teen.

He had recently moved here from Spain and was a young resident who would later become a respected cardio vascular surgeon. They married and from the start she was beside him, working in the office, handling the paperwork, the scheduling, the patient needs.

"My dad was out front, in the spotlight, but she was the one behind the scenes. She played the biggest part in his success and in our success as a family, " said Tony Izquierdo, of Florence.

"My dad did a lot of indigent care. A lot of that was at the urging of my mother. He would waive his fees for surgery."

The Izquierdos raised five sons.

"My mom was always there to walk us to the bus stop in the morning and she was there for us at night, " her son said. "She was a tough disciplinarian. She was only 5-feet-4-inches tall, but she commanded our respect. When her parents became ill in the 1980s, she cared for them in her home.

"I learned a lot about self-sacrifice from her, " her son said. "I learned you have to go after what you want in life. It's not free. You have to work for it.

"And I learned about dedication and true love. She and my father truly loved each other and liked each other."

Mrs. Izquierdo became ill about five months ago and later learned she had cancer.

She was a member of Latonia Social Club.
