Betty Liggett, mother and magnet collector
When Leonard Liggett was a young man, he didn't ask God for a beautiful wife, but for "an old country girl that would love me and have a good personality."
That's exactly what he found in Elizabeth "Betty" Louise Schmidt Liggett, who died Monday at age 69.
They met in Covington, when Liggett, who had dropped out of school in the ninth grade, was working as an usher in the old Liberty Theater on Madison Avenue.
Liggett went into the Navy in January 1951; the two married
while he was on leave July 31, 1952.
For the first year of marriage, he didn't know where his wife lived. He wrote her letters from overseas, but she received them at her aunt's house, because she was living with her grandfather, who didn't have a street address.
When he returned home on leave again, it took him two days to track her down, at her job with Gibson Greeting Cards in Cincinnati.
"It was a little weird, " he said.
The couple raised four boys together. "She was awfully good with the children, " her husband said.
When he retired in 1994, the Independence couple vacationed out West together, and in 1998 they went on a 31-day camping trip to Alaska.
Everywhere they went, Mrs. Liggett would collect refrigerator magnets as souvenirs. Whenever grandchildren wanted to buy her things, she would ask for magnets as well.
"Her refrigerator is plumb full of them, " her husband said.
