Dave Ducker, 55, fire captain
When it became clear to Dave Ducker that he had only a short time to live, he decided to make it easier on everyone.
The Morningview resident made his own funeral arrangements, disposed of his possessions and even wrote his own obituary.
"That's the kind of guy he was, " said his friend, Chris Fryman, who served with Mr. Ducker on the Covington Fire Department. "He just didn't want to put nobody out."
Mr. Ducker, who died of stomach cancer on Monday at the age of 55, left behind only one family member, his 84-year-old mother, Nora Elizabeth Ducker of Covington.
"I was right there holding his hand, " Mrs. Ducker said. "He had no pain . . . but he said he was ready to go."
Fryman said Mr. Ducker told his mother not to think of his death as losing a son, but as gaining three sons - Fryman and his other close friends, Jim Rollins and Todd Ryder.
"We told him we would take care of her just like she was our own mother, " Fry man said.
Mr. Ducker told his friends he didn't want them to treat him any differently because he was dying.
He just wanted them to enjoy the remaining time they had together, Fryman said.
He never questioned why it was happening to him, and he continued to joke and tease his friends until his death.
If anyone ever writes a book on how to die, he could use Mr. Ducker as an exam ple, Fryman said.
Fryman will miss the times they had together hunting together, talking over problems that they had.
He said he would miss having him to lean on.
"I don't think he had an enemy in the world, " Mrs. Ducker said.
Mr. Ducker reached the rank of captain in the fire department and was a member of the Covington Firefighters Union.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of the National Rifle Association.
