Edythe Newkirk Owens, elementary school teacher

For a quarter of a century, Edythe Newkirk Owens taught elementary school children.

"She probably taught most everyone here in Northern Kentucky at one time or another, whether it be first-grade or whether it be through music, " said a son, Robert Newell Owens of Crestview Hills, who was in some of his mother's classes.

"She was very caring and very interested in the kids. She made you toe the line. But all I can tell you is when you left her class, you were much more knowledgeable than when you got into it."

Mrs. Owens, 82, died Wednes day morning at St. Elizabeth Hos pice Unit in Covington.

Mrs. Owens was born and reared in Butler, and that's where, in the mid-1950s, she began her teaching career. Her assignment: first grade at Portland Elementary School.

She later taught first and third grades at Bromley Elementary School and then music at Crescent Springs, Ryland Heights and Park Hills elementary schools.

Mrs. Owens took a break from teaching but resumed in the mid- 1960s as a first-grade teacher at Park Hills Elementary, a position she held until she retired in the early 1980s.

In addition, Mrs. Owens had an active spiritual life.

"She and my father were life- long members of Madison Avenue Christian Church, where she was a past deaconess and Sunday school teacher, " said Robert Owens.

Mrs. Owens also was a pianist and member of the choir at the church.

Other survivors include her husband, Ross Collins Owens Jr.; son, Ross Collins "Col" Owens III of Covington; daughters, Rev. Bar bara Owens Hite of Southaven, Miss., and Brenda Owens Anthony of Cincinnati; a sister, Joyce McClanahan of Butler; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchild ren.

Services will be at 7 tonight at Madison Avenue Christian Church in Covington. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Satur day in Highland cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Madison Avenue Christian Church Book of Remembrance, 1530 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Allison and Rose Funeral Home in Covington is handling arrange ments.

Raymond Abner, 81, of Latonia, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

He was a retired manager with Jack's Glass, Covington, and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, West Covington. He was a member of Col. Clay Masonic Lodge No. 159 F&AM, the Scottish Rite, American Le gion Post No. 203 in Latonia, Marshall-Schildmeyer VFW Post No. 6095 in Latonia and Covington FOPA No. 1, and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Virgil Rogers Abner; sons, Jerry Abner of Florida and Bill Abner of Walton; daughters, Pam Robinson of Kenton Vale, Mary Jo Donnelly of Lakeside Park, Tina Rengering of Independence and Kim Fulmer of Independence; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Epworth United Methodist Church, West Covington. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, with Masonic services at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1229 Highway Ave., Covington, Ky. 4101; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

John Woodford Beckett, 68, of Pendleton County, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired driver with Fisher & Arnold, Falmouth.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane DeBault of St. Louis, and a son, Michael Beckett, serving in the Navy.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Naomi Bradford, 88, of Elsmere, died Thursday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

James Burton, 44, of Newport, died Wednesday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Willard A. Caddell, 79, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a mechanical draftsman with the Kroger Co. in downtown Cincinnati, where he designed refrigeration units. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Fort Wright and was past master of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 345 in Latonia.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Schulten Caddell; daughters, Dr. Carol Roark of Erlanger and Susan Roeder of West Point, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by Masonic services. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Colonial Gardens Activities Fund, 6910 Hopeful Road, Florence, Ky. 41042; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Elmer Lee Cummins, 65, of Foster, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired employee of Hadronics Corp. in Norwood, Ohio, and a member of cemetery Chapel Christian Church, Lenoxburg.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Ramsey Cummins; a son, Randy Cummins of Foster; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to cemetery Chapel Christian Church, 795 Lenoxburg Foster Road, Foster, Ky, 41043.

Ruth Ashcraft Feagan, 86, of Augusta, died Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Augusta.

Survivors include sons, Patrick Earl Feagan of Augusta and John Michael Feagan of Beth Page, Tenn.; a daughter, Marianne Dusing of Foster; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church, Augusta, Ky. 41002.

Carl G. Hall, 84, of Latonia, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Marie A. Heimbrock, 74, of Edgewood, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Robert G. Heimbrock; daughters, Constance Maccarone of Cincinnati, Christine Hiltz of Fort Mitchell and Cynthia Bell of Edgewood; a son, Robert C. Heimbrock of Edgewood; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Henry High School, 3755 Scheben Drive, Erlanger, Ky. 41018; or St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, 1 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Brent Hopperton, 25, of Corinth, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was a pilot and flight instructor with Photo Science Inc., Lexington, and a member of First Love Community Fellowship, Crittenden, where he was a small-group leader.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Knight Hopperton; his parents, Rickey and Dorothy McCain Hopperton of Dry Ridge; a sister, Lori Hopperton of Dry Ridge; and grandmother, Nina Hopperton of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Love Community Fellowship, Crittenden, Ky. 41030.

Dorothy Schatzman, 86, of Bellevue, died Wednesday at her home. SHe was a nurses aide with Speers Hospital, Dayton. A daughter, Dorothy Brooks, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Geraldine Lawson of Alexandria; sons, Eugene Miller and Howard Miller, both of Bellevue, and Gregory Miller of Fort Myers, Fla.; and a sister, Rita Hicks of Fayetteville, Ohio.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Gertrude A. Schell, 86, of Covington, died Wednesday at Woodcrest Manor, Erlanger.

She was a member of Community Pentecostal Church, Independence. Her husband, Roscoe Schell, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Schell of Morning View; a daughter, Janice Lakes of Berea; a brother, Willis Mul lins of Richmond; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Community Pentecostal Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Community Pentecostal Church, 11875 Taylor Mill Road, Independence, Ky. 41051.

Patricia Sechrest, 56, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.

Martha Louthan Shyrigh, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died June 28 in Northern Kentucky. She was a retired employee of the Internal Revenue Service, a past worthy matron of Bristow Chapter No. 31 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of White Shrine and Bethel No. 6 OJD. Her husband, Harry Shyrigh, died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, H. Duane Shyrigh of Ocala; daughters, Margot Cahill of Walton and Sharon Shyrigh of Lakeland, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Florida. Fero Funeral Home and Cemetery, Beverly Hills, Fla., handled arrangements.
