R.A. "Bob" Burns, 80, operated Florence truck stop
For years, R.A. "Bob" Burns and his brothers operated one of the most popular businesses for travelers passing through Florence - Burns Brothers Truck Stop.
Mr. Burns, 80, died Friday at his home in Union.
Mr. Burns and brothers Richard and Bill started the truck stop in 1965 at the Interstate 75 and Ky. 18 interchange. The three worked as general managers, with Bob in charge of the restaurant.
"The big thing they had was biscuits and gravy, " said a son, Randy Burns of Union.
Mr. Burns and his wife, Wanda June Burns, had 10 children.
"He was a family man, " Randy Burns said. "His family meant everything to him. He just lived and breathed for them."
Mr. Burns retired from the family business in 1987, and his brothers sold the truck stop in 1995.
After retirement, Mr. Burns spent time farming.
Around the house, he enjoyed bird-watching and tending bonsai plants. He also had a passion for flowers, said his daughter-in-law, Barb Burns.
Mr. Burns also enjoyed woodworking, and with his sons he built the first altar and podium -- made from the wood of an ash tree from his farm -- at St. Timothy Church in Union, his daughter-in-law said.
He met his wife 59 years ago when he was stationed in Elk City, Okla. They were married
within six weeks, his son said.
Barb Burns said her father-in-law was a likeable man who treated everyone well. "He's going to be missed."
Mr. Burns was a World War II veteran who served on the Kenneth Whiting, a plane tender, and was an air crewman in the Pacific, his son said.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Association of Truck Stop Operators and the Union Fire Protection District.
Other survivors include sons, Mike Burns of Cincinnati and Danny Burns of Florence; daughters, Mary Burns and Becky Dozier, both of Florence, Donna Burns of Union, Dorothy Hamm of Orlando, Fla., Pam Hunt and Missy Rittinger, both of Union; a brother, Bill Burns of Cape Coral, Fla.; 27 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Timothy Church, Union, at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be at St. John cemetery Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Naomi Ruth Lynem Bradford, 88, of Elsmere, died Thursday at Village Care Center in Erlanger. She was a member of Barnes Temple AME, Erlanger, and Golden Age Club. A daughter, Pearl Ann Bothwell, died in 1997, and a granddaughter, Ruth Bothwell, died in 1992.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas R. Bradford; sons, H.E. Fowler of Los Angles, Charles S. Fowler of Elsmere and Richard B. Fowler of Wilder; stepsons, Richard Bradford and Billy Bradford, both of Elsmere; a stepdaughter, Helen Bradford of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Barnes Temple AME. Visitation starts at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mary Smith Cemetery, Elsmere.

Susan Jensen Brown, 59, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Friday at Hospice of Cincinnati. She was a curator for the FDR home, Vanderbilt Mansion, Hyde Park, N.Y., and worked in the Development Department at the University of Cincinnati for the nursing program and the library.
Survivors include sons, Andrew Brown of Cincinnati and William J. Reik III of New Canaan, Conn.; a brother, Mark Jensen of Newport; sisters, Peggy Kuhnhein of Edgewood, Sally Sandretti of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Paula Stull of Covington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation starts at 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, For Thomas.

James Burton, 44, of Newport, died Wednesday at his home.
Survivors include a daughter, Angie Burton of Florence; brothers, Adam Burton of Elmwood, Ohio, Timothy Burton of Georgetown, Ohio, and Ronnie Burton, Ricky Burton, and Donald Burton, all of Newport; and sisters, Nada Burton and Francis Anaruma, both of Newport.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Alexandria Cemetery.
Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.
Elmer Ray Cummins, 65, of Foster, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired employee of Hadronics Corp. in Norwood, Ohio, and a member of cemetery Chapel Christian Church, Lenoxburg.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Ramsey Cummins; a son, Randy Cummins of Foster; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery.

Rose Grinnell, 100, of Erlanger, formerly of Brandenburg, died at 3:55 p.m. Thursday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a retired proprietor of Grinnell's Drug Store, Brandenburg, and a member of Brandenburg United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mary G. Allen of Danville.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Jenkins Funeral Home, Brandenburg. Visitation starts at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Capp Anderson Cemetery, Brandenburg.

Carl G. Hall, 84, of Latonia, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired welder for Rodex Corp., a member of James Street Church of Christ, and a World War II veteran of the Army.
His wife, Clara Marie Thompson Hall, died in 2000. Survivors include a son, Darrell Hall of Latonia; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.
Brent Hopperton, 25, of Corinth, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati, of injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was a pilot and flight instructor with Photo Science Inc., Lexington, and a member of First Love Community Fellowship, Crittenden, where he was a small group leader.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Knight Hopperton; his parents, Rickey and Dorothy McCain Hopperton of Dry Ridge; a sister, Lori Dawalt of Dry Ridge; and grandmother, Nina Hopperton of Dry Ridge.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Josie Lynn Horn, daughter of Trena and Ronald Jason Horn of Burlington, was stillborn Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include her brother, Stephan Horn of Versailles, Ind.; paternal grandparents, Mary and Ronald Horn of Versailles, Ind.; maternal grandmother, Debbie Bischoff of Bright, Ind.; and paternal grandfather, Wayne Haase of Red Oak, Texas.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Lena Evelyn Leek, 59, of Independence, died Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Petersburg Christian Church. Her husband, Paul G. Leek, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughters, Angela Bolt of Walton, Cheryl Schmidt of Petersburg, Regina Moore of Independence and Patty Jo Leek of Lexington, Ohio; sons, Paul Allen Leek and Michael Earl Leek, both of Florence; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Anna M. Duncan Simon, 75, of Cold Spring, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington. She worked in the cafeteria for the St. Joseph Church and St. Thomas Church festivals, was the first woman coach for softball in Fort Thomas, a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring, and the St. Mary's Ladies Society of St. Joseph Church.
She was a past member of Campbell County Democratic Club, past president of Mother's Club of St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas, past den mother and leader for Girl Scouts, Brownies and Cub Scouts, and a volunteer with Northern Kentucky Association for the Retarded.
Survivors include her husband, John G. Simon; sons, Jim Simon of Hudson, Fla., and John Simon of Highland Heights; a daughter, Patty Simon of Cold Spring; a sister, Evelyn "Boots" Hickman of Newport; a brother, Larry Smith of Newport; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ilse M. Steger, 95, of Florence, died at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a retired bank bookkeeper with Mark Keshisbian & Sons Inc. in Chevy Chase, Md., a volunteer at Woodspoint Nursing Home and the Erlanger branch of the Kenton County Public Library.
Survivors include her caretakers, Don Goodridge and Leondus Beach, both of Florence.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Ms. Steger bequeathed her body to the University of Kentucky.

Lillian Ada Mefford Wallingford, 87, of Maysville, died Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Maysville. Her husband, Roy C. Wallingford, died in 1978.
Survivors include several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation starts at noon Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.
