Thornton "Shavey" Hord, retired Sardis fire chief
Thornton "Shavey" Hord was an outgoing, talkative man who made his living selling things.
But in his younger years, his wife said, he was quite a musician.
"He played almost any instrument you could play, " Mrs. Jean Swart Hord said.
His favorite was the mandolin, but he easily learned the violin and guitar, she said.
Mr. Hord, who died Sunday, helped found the Sardis Volunteer Fire Department, and served as its chief for 20 years. He was very proud of being made a Kentucky Colonel while chief, his wife said.
He was a retired car salesman with Osgood Motors in Maysville and Bob Gillespie Chevrolet, Brooksville. He also sold aluminum siding, Mrs. Hord said.
The Hords were married
for 57 years and raised three children.
Mr. Hord, 79, of Sardis, died at 4:05 p.m. Sunday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. An infant son, Gregory Hord, preceded him in death.
Other survivors include sons, Mike Hord of Mason County and Jeffrey Hord of Cynthiana; and a daughter, Cathy Hord of Lexington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home, May's Lick. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, May's Lick.

Gerald L. Butt, 74, of Walton, died Friday at his home. He was a research development engineer with Stewart Decatur Security and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Sons Kevin Butt and David Butt, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. Martin Butt; a son, Bill Butt of Walton; a daughter, Debbie Sturdivant of Hebron; a sister, Jean Hamilton of Oklahoma; and four grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, is handling arrangements.
Thomas E. Clifford, 69, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired postal worker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Cynthiana, Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438 and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Ramey Clifford; a daughter, Kimberly Kaye Sosbe of Cynthiana; brothers Lowell J. Clifford and Jeffrey Clifford, both of Cynthiana, Gilbert Skinner Lexington and David Clifford of Frankfort; sisters Mary Lou Bishop of Cynthiana and Rosella Hayes of Paris; and two grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Burial was in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Leslie Martin Coleman, 89, of Falmouth, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Dorothy "Doris" M. Stewart Criss, of Highland Heights, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a florist shop clerk and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Her husband, Ralph Stewart, died in 1961.
Survivors include a son, Jack Stewart of Cold Spring; a daughter, Sherri Vann of Highland Heights; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Camp Springs.
Albert L. Dwertman, 92, of Fort Wright, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired greeting card designer with Gibson Greeting Card Co., Cincinnati. His wife, Marie Verkamp Dwertman, died in 1995.
Survivors include a brother, Clem Dwertman of Fort Wright, and a sister, Dorothy Nolan, also of Fort Wright.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Richard E. Finke, 69, of Park Hills, died at 11:13 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired owner of Dick Finke Meats, a member of St. Agnes Church on Fort Wright and the National Rifle Association, and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Finke; sons Paul R. Finke of Fort Wright and Jeffrey E. Finke of Florence; daughters Teresa A. Pikar of Fort Thomas, Jennifer M. Kleier of Fort Wright, Rebecca L. Finke of Cincinnati, and Amy A. White of Indianapolis; and 17 grandchildren.

Harley Bruse Fisk,, 81, of Florence, died Sunday at Woodcrest Manor Nursing Home, Elsmere. He was an architect, a member of Florence Christian Church and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Sally Jean Fisk of Yorktown, Va.; a son, John Harley Fisk of Union; and a stepsister, Bette Drake of Tampa, Fla.

"Ren" Knasel, 70, of Edgewood, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Carol Patterson Milner, 66, of Corinth, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Lystra Church of Christ, Williamstown. Her father, Fred Patterson, died Feb. 15.
Survivors include her husband, Wendell Milner; a daughter, Dixie Cox of Florence; sons John Milner of Hamilton, Ohio, and Daniel Milner of Middletown, Ohio; her mother, Corinne Patterson of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Carolina Sample-Lockard, 56, of Florence, died Friday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a medical office manager.
Survivors include sons William Lockard of San Pedro, Calif., and Seth Lockard of Ludlow; a daughter, Kathryn Brown of Morehead; and sisters Nancy Sample of Reno, Nev., and Anne Burdette of Houston.

Patricia Sue Washington Sechrest, 56, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a retired custodian with the U.S. Postal Service in Walton and a member of Second Baptist Church of Owenton.
Survivors include her husband, Sonny Sechrest; daughters Patti Sechrest of Union and Tina Se chrest of Hebron; a son, Tony Se chrest of California; her mother, Flora Belle Washington of Owenton; sisters Georgia Mae Tolliver of Sparta, Geraldine Long of Owenton, and Alma Holiday of Cincinnati; brothers Dale Washington of Frankfort, and Benny Washington of the state of California; and seven grandchildren.

Charles W. White, 81, of Marion, Ind., died Saturday at Edgemont Manor, Cynthiana. He was a maintenance worker and an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Phillip Anthony White, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons William Gary Whit of Mount Olivet, and Ronald Lee White of Richmond; a daughter, Linda Sue Anderson of Cynthiana; a brother, Jesse White of Brooksville; sisters Margaret Gordley of Augusta, and Ethlene White of Detroit; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Margaret Willoughby, 83, of Covington, died at 12:05 p.m. Sunday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.

Enoch R. J. Wooton, 67, of Alexandria, died Friday at his home. He was a retired assembler with General Motors in Norwood, Ohio, and a member of Licking Valley Baptist Church, Alexandria.
Survivors include sons Gordon Wooton of Connersville, Ind., and Doug Wooton of Alexandria; daughters Lucinda Martin, also of Alexandria, Connie Martin of Corbin, and Rosanna Faircloth of North Carolina; his mother, Oma Wooton of Bloomington, Ind.; a brother, Everett Wooton of Alexandria; a sister, Agnes Ingram of Solsberry, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren.
