Charlotte Kernan, 90, principal and mentor
Charlotte J. Kernan was more than a teacher - she was a mentor for three generations of Campbell County students.
Relatives say that she taught so many people that every place she went she was greeted by past students or their parents.
"There wasn't too many places you could go in Campbell County where people didn't know her, " said Ms. Kernan's niece, Anna Louise Teichmoeller, of California.
Ms. Kernan, 90, of Alexandria, died June 3 at her home.
She graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, in 1933 with an education degree. She earned her master's degree 27 years later from Xavier University.
Ms. Kernan taught science at Newport High School for 25 years, and in 1957, she became principal at Bellevue Center Street Elementary School, which later became Bellevue Grandview School. She served in that post until she retired in 1976.
Her love for learning did not stop with teaching, though. Teichmoeller said her aunt traveled to Egypt, Russia, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Greece. She was very interested in foreign places and always enjoyed reading, especially National Geographic magazine.
"I couldn't keep her supplied with books, " Teichmoeller said.
Ms. Kernan was a lifetime member at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Newport. She drove herself to church every Sunday until the last month of her life.
Other survivors include a nephew, John Teichmoeller of Ellicott City, Md.
