Felix 'Sonny' Howard, brewery foreman
An evangelist at a brewery may seem odd, but to Felix "Sonny" W. Howard it was all part of God's great plan.
"He felt he was placed there to be a witness, " said Mr. Howard's daughter Sheila Ramundo, of Cold Spring. Mr. Howard was a foreman for Weidemann's Brewery in Newport for 36 years.
Mr. Howard, 77, died Sunday at his Fort Thomas home of complications from a stroke he had in 1986 and congestive heart failure.
At 44, Mr. Howard decided to turn his life around and became a born-again Christian. After that, he evangelized to the sick, the imprisoned and ordinary people who walked by him on the street. People would call the Howard household in the middle of the night for prayers and many attributed their health or happiness to his presence, Ramundo said.
"Everyone had faith in his healing touch, " she said.
Ramundo said she believes her father's prayers from his deathbed are what saved the 2-month-old infant of her nephew, Tory Ramundo. The baby was thought to have cystic fibrosis, but Sunday night doctors determined that wasn't the case.
When she went to him and told him the news, "he raised both hands to heaven and prayed the most perfect and beautiful prayer, " she said. "His communication to God was perfect despite his failing health."
His love for children was not limited to his family either.
Classmates of his 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren would bring prayer requests to him.
"It was always Papaw who they want ed to pray for them, " she said.
Mr. Howard's nephew, Rev. David Brock, of Fort Wright, remembers his uncle's zeal for church and says he will be missed by many people.
"Not to mention his family and friends, the inspiration he was to his church will me missed, " he said. "They'll be many, many people who will miss him."
