James Stokley, retired letter carrier
When an elderly woman on his mail route took a bad fall, James V. "Jim" Stokley skipped her mail box and went straight to her door to personally deliver her packages and letters each morning.
He knew her name and address by heart, along with those of the 200 or more other homes on his route in Newport, said Mr. Stokley's wife, Shirley.
The woman was so grateful she left him $4, 000 in her will, Mrs. Stokley said.
Mr. Stokley, of Southgate, retired from the postal service in 1976, after 22 years as a carrier. But until he died from a heart attack Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, he could still recite each name and address on his route, his wife said. He was 76.
Mr. Stokley met his wife at a birthday party and they married
in 1951.
Mrs. Stokley swims through memories of her husband, recalling Christmases when he'd feed the family ham and cheese omelets, and their yearly ventures to state parks.
"That meant a lot to me, " she said.
Mr. Stokley's youngest daughter, Traci Bachman of Cincinnati, won't forget the times her father's help bailed her out of a failing grade in math class.
"He was like a human calculator, " she said. "He had an unbelievable mind."
For several years, Mr. Stokley owned a bicycle shop, which he never named, in Fort Thomas.
He served as an elected officer of the Kentucky State Association of the National Association of Letter Carriers for 35 years, as the treasurer of the Campbell County chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees for 19 years and was elected District Four vice president of the federal retirees group in 1985.
