Carl William Nunner, home-delivery milkman
Carl William Nunner belonged to an era when time didn't go by so quickly.
Mr. Nunner, who died Wednesday, worked 29 years as a home-delivery man for the Trauth Dairy in Newport.
To his family, he was known as the world's last milkman - as in, the last one to finish his route at the end of the day.
"He would eat breakfast at this person's house, and eat lunch at that person's house, " said his daughter, Debbie Kuntz of Fort Thomas. "He never knew a stranger."
Mr. Nunner, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:32 a.m. Wednesday at his home. He was 78.
He first had a route in rural Campbell County, where neighbors would often leave him notes asking him to do minor chores around the farm.
Later, his route was in Fort Thomas and Southgate, where he got to know another set of customers and friends.
He would thread a week's worth of needles for two elderly spinsters who couldn't see very well, his daughter said.
"He was the type of person who had time for everyone, " she said.
When the dairy ended home de livery in 1981, Mr. Nunner worked for Enslen's Grocery in Fort Thomas until it shut down, then delivered flowers for Victor H. Brown & Son Florist in Highland Heights.
He always had a smile on his face, and until the last year of his life, always whistled a happy tune.
"I thought all men could whistle, until I started dating, " Kuntz said.
She said her father leaves behind thousands of friends he met along the way.
"He was just a person who needed to deal with people, " she said.
"He was a person they could sit down with and talk to and tell him their problems."
Mr. Nunner was an Army veteran of World War II.
