Helen Block, grocery store owner
Helen Ann Block loved to dance.
When they were young, she and her sister, Dorothy Vandt, of Piner, did the jitterbug and squa re danced all over Coney Island to impress the boys.
"We'd always dance with them but we would never take them home, " Vandt laughed. "We just loved to dance."
Mrs. Block died in her Newport home Sunday. She was 87.
As her dancing demonstrated, Mrs. Block lived a very energetic life.
She and her late husband, William Block Sr., owned the Block's grocery stores at Fourth and Co lumbia streets and Ninth and Central streets in Newport for about 25 years. At one time their stores were among the largest i n Newport.
After her husband died in 1976, Mrs. Block joined the Daughters of America and the V.F.W. Aux iliary and served in a number of positions for both.
Later, she joined the Northern Kentucky Seniors, for which she played in the kazoo band and p articipated in the dance group, re turning to her original love.
"You name it, we danced it, " Vandt said. "She lived a pretty active life."
Other survivors include a son, William Block Jr. of Newport; two grandchildren and five great -grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate
Sue Curtis Beach, 62, of Latonia, died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday at her home.
She was an employee of Anexder Co., Latonia, a union steward and a captain of the Covington Block Watch program. A son, Lonnie Wayne Niece, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Gena S. Martin of Covington, Cindy Gambrell and Brandy Beach, both of Latonia, and Rhonda L. Studer of T aylor Mill; her mother, Lillian Penrod of Covington; brothers, Gregory A. Beagle of Florence, Rom R. Beagle of B urlington and Douglas F. Penrod of Latonia; a sister, Ann Curtis of Covington; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Gary Lee "Junior" Brewer, 29, of Glencoe, died Saturday in an auto accident in Hebron.
He was a forklift operator with Smith & Hawkins and a member of First Baptist Church of Walton. His wife, Stephanie Kay Catron Murphy Brewer, also died in the accident.
Survivors include a son, August Brew er; daughters, Kerry Brewer and Torey Brewer; a stepson, Jordan Murphy; a stepdaughter, Cheyenne Murphy; his parents, Shirley and Gary Lee Brewer Sr. of Walton; a brother, Todd Brewer of Crittenden; and gr andparents, Kenneth and Rose Brewer of Walton and Ruth Milner of Independence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Stephanie Kay Catron Murphy Brewer, 30, of Glencoe, died Saturday in an auto accident in Hebron.
She was a material handler with the Discovery Chanel and a member of All Saints Church, Walton. Her husband, Gary Lee "Junior" Brewer, also died in the accident.
Survivors include a son, Jordan Murphy; a daughter, Cheyenne Murphy; a stepson, August Brewer; stepdaughters, Kerry Brewer and Torey Brewer; her par ents, Stephen Allen Catron of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Charlene Kay Catron Sizemore of Glencoe; and grandparents, Fenton and Jolene Catron of Carrollton, and Patricia Mae Riley of Erlanger.

Audrey Mae Burchfield, 66, of Dry Ridge, died Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a nurse with Carlsbad Nursing Home in Dry Ridge. She also worked as an emergency medical technician in G rant County. Her husband, Euell Burchfield, and a son, Charles Burchfield, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Roy James Burchfield and Terry Burchfield, both of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Linda Getts of Big Rapids, Mich.; sisters, Betty Nichols of St. Louis, Shirley Hannon of St. Peters, Ill., Ruth Krahal of St. Charles, Ill., and Evelyn Reissing of Hillsboro, Mo.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. William's Hall, Williamstown. Mrs. Burchfield bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Richard E. Cummins, 79, of Newport, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired mechanic with International Harvest, Cincinnati, a member of American Legion Post No. 11 in Newport and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Rick Cummins of Bellevue and Tom Cummins of Newport; a daughter, Joyce Lusher of Claryville; a sister, Loretta Ruf of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Charles James Daniels, son of Jason Anthony "Bubba" and Beverly Daniels of Burlington, was stillborn Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include a twin brother, Jason Anthony Daniels Jr.; and grandparents, Nancy Byrd of Burlington and James and Margie Daniels of Fort Wayne, Ind.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Belleview Baptist Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Daniel Family Trust Fund, in care of Boone National Bank or the Bank of Kentucky. Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington, is handling arrangements.
Lillian Pickett Faulkner, 85, of Berry, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and a member of New Friendship Baptist Church, Harrison County. She was a former employee of Edgemont Manor, Cynthiana, and Hansley Mills. Her husband, Avery Faulkner, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Joann Switzer of Berry; a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Raven Creek Cemetery, Harrison County.
Betty Jo Hill, 61, of Erlanger, died at 8:59 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a housekeeper with St. Elizabeth Medical Centers.
Survivors include her husband, David Hill; a daughter, Debbie Pugh of Burlington; sons, Bruce Hill of Brooksville, Ron Hill of Independence and Woody Hill of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Eula Croley of Williamsburg; brothers, James Davis, Joe Davis, Larry Davis and Ace Davis, all of Williamsburg; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be fro m 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Agnes McNay Pfeffer, 82, of Newport, died at 6:20 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital E ast, Fort Thomas.
She was a production worker with Mosler Safe Co. Her husband, Herald F. Pfeffer, died in 1978. A daughter, Jeraldine Quiambao, died in 1994.
Survivors include two grandsons, Brad Quiambao and Steve Quiambao, both of Cincinnati; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Martha Elizabeth Ruehl, 89, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:30 p.m. July 14 at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas. She was a retired clerk with Ohio National Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and a member of the Rosary Society and Over 55 Club at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Fred J. Ruehl, died in 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Clara Ann Klocke of Fort Thomas; a sister, Alverna Epping of Fort Thomas; three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Sciamanna, 75, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a registered nurse at Crestview Hills Nursing Home. A daughter, Kathy Sciamanna, died in 1968.
Survivors include a daughter, Gayle Clinker of Sunrise, Fla.; a son, Marty Sciamanna of Florence; a sister, Betty McCoy of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 9 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 1633 Creekview Drive, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Ms. Sciamanna bequeathed her body to science. Catheryn Eleanor Steinhauer, 79, of Falmouth, died at 9:05 p.m. Friday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Harold Walter Steinhauer, died in 1991. A son, Gerald Steinhauer, died in 2002.
Survivors include a daughter, Florence Workman of Taylor Mill; a brother, Pete D. Crone of Covington; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Viola L. Telgemeier, 80, of Ripley, Ind., died Sunday at Woodland Hills Care Center in Lawrenceburg, Ind. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Oscar H. Telgemeier, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Ida Jean Liggett of Park Hills and Vivian E. Shelley of Clermont County, Ohio; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Diane Lynne Tungate, 43, of Elsmere, died July 16 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was an employee of the Subway restaurant in Florence.
Survivors include her mother, Glenna Tungate of Cincinnati, and brother, John R. Maxwell of E lsmere.

Margaret Konerman Nether Washnock, 89, of Independence, died at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired bookkeeper with Scallon's Office Supply Co., Cincinnati and Brenneman-Hartshorn Co. She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Taylor Mill, a member of the church Irish Rovers, Northern Kentucky Grandmothers Club and Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens. Her husband, Leo Joseph Washnock Jr., died in 1999.
Survivors include sons, Frank W. Nether of Independence and David G. Nether of Chicago; a daughter, Margene Wilkins of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
