Ledford Herald, retired from Reliable Castings
When he was growing up in Breathitt County, Ledford Herald knew the girl who would become his wife, but he didn't like her.
Mr. Herald, who died Tuesday at age 75 in St. Luke Hospital, Fort Thomas, worked in his father's grocery in Jackson, where Dorcas Turner sometimes came to shop.
"She would ask for flour, or sugar, and he would say, 'You know where it is, go and get it, ' " said their son, Lonnie Herald, who lives in Erlanger.
At 17, Mr. Herald left Breathitt County to take a job with the Reliable Castings Co. in Cincinnati, and settled in Newport.
His wife-to-be also found work in Cincinnati, and, by coincidence, the girl who had lived a mountain away from him in Breathitt County moved a block away.
When they found each other in Newport, the former animosity was forgotten.
They fell in love and got married, forming a union that would last 54 years.
"I guess it was meant to be, " Lonnie Herald said.
Mr. Herald retired after working for Reliable for 32 years.
He, his wife and her brother, Cle tus Turner, would spend every Thursday bargain-hunting at antique stores and flea markets.
"If it was a deal, he would buy it, " Lonnie Herald said. "He's probably got 25 pairs of shoes."
