Charles Mile, 80, cafe owner
Charles "Duke" Mile always took pride in being one of Northern Kentucky's old -time gamblers.
Mr. Mile, 80, of Bellevue, who died Sunday, liked the notoriety of hanging around with the likes of nightclub owner and racketeer Frank "Screw" Andrews, said his son, Chuck Mile.
He knew the old-time nightclub owners, such as Dick Schilling at the old Beverly Hills Supper Club, through his ownership of the Avenue Cafe in Bellevue.
Mr. Mile took over the cafe from his father, Cliff Mile, in the early 1950s and ran it until 1978.
The cafe took bets on horses and hosted crap games, Chuck Mile said.
Even after illegal gambling was forced out of the area, his father ran an after-hours gambling club out of the basement of the restaurant, he said.
Much of the money spent on gambling went to needy children in the neighborhood, Chuck Mile said, through means like the Good SAM raffle, which raised money to buy shoes and milk for children in Newport, Bellevue and Dayton.
"He felt like he was doing good, even though it was illegal, " Chuck Mile said.
A few years before he sold it, Mr. Mile gutted the cafe in an unsuccessful attempt to convert it into an upscale nightclub.
The building, at 179 Fairfield Ave., is now the home to the Crawford Insurance Co.
Mr. Mile hated retirement, his son said, and soon went to work in the cafeteria at Northern Kentucky University, continuing until a few weeks before his death.
His greatest joy was being a grandfather to Chuck's children, Shawn and Lacy, Chuck said.
His father loved people, the younger Mile said.
"I must have had at least 50 or 60 calls from people telling me how much he had affected their lives, " he said.
Mr. Mile was a World War II veteran.
