Leo 'Coley' Nieman, worked at family cafes

Leo G. "Coley" Nieman liked to entertain his friends and customers with his unique sense of humor.

"My dad used to say, 'If the river was whiskey and I was a duck, I'd swim to the bottom and never come up, ' " said his daughter, Pam Meyer, of Blue Bell, Pa.

Mr. Nieman, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth South Hospital. He was 86.

Family members say his humor served him well with the people he tended bar for at the many taverns his family operated, including Nieman's Cafe, at 8th and Main streets in Covington.

Mr. Nieman's son, Bill Nieman, of Florence, said he remembered his father sharing stories about the people he served.

"They were a good cast of characters, " Nieman said.

Mr. Nieman also like to share stories about money he won gambling on the horses.

His son remembers him once bringing home $5,000 from the old Latonia Race Course in Florence.

Mr. Nieman was a devout Catholic who attended Sunday Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, his daughter said.

He was also known for his love of children, she said. He would always have lollipops for kids he ran into and take neighborhood children to local softball games.

He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Saddle Club in Fort Mitchell, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include his wife, Marion C. Funk Nieman; daughters, Joan Robbins of Crestview Hills, Janet Kinney of Villa Hills and Linda Ireland of Fort Mitchell; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

James L. Ayres, 81, of Warsaw, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a carpenter and homebuilder, and a member of Warsaw United Methodist Church, Tadmor Lodge No. 108 in Warsaw and Eastern Star Chapter No. 441, Ghent. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Ayres; daughters, Beverly Andrew of Warsaw and Deborah Riddle of Glencoe; a brother, Robert Ayres of Vevay, Ind.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.

Margaret Elizabeth Bihl, 89, of Alexandria, died at 10:25 p.m. Sunday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. She was a retired cook with Alexandria Elementary School and a former telephone operator with Thatcher Telephone Exchange in Alexandria. Her husband, August Jerome Bihl, died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, John C. Bihl of Hillsboro, Ohio; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Gladys M. Billiter, 84, of Covington, died Monday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of Williamstown Church of God. Her husband, Allie Russell Billiter, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Russell Billiter of Chester, Va.; and a grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Joyce Ann Greene Carver, 67, of Owenton, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church, Owenton.

Survivors include her husband, Winston H. Carver; a son, Harry W. Carver of Whitehouse, Texas; daughters, Debra C. McGraw of Oxford, Mich., Teresa J. Brown of Waterford, Mich., and Susan A. Black of South Lyon, Mich.; her mother, Helen Moore Greene of Sparta; and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, N. Main St., Owenton, Ky. 41052.

Harvey B. Chandler, of Warsaw, died Monday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Betty L. Cooper, 74, of Fort Wright, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, D. Kendall Cooper; a daughter, Patricia Howard of Erlanger, Joan Clark of Walton, Jackie Price of San Diego and Paula Hanna of Dry Ridge; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Robert Graves, 90, of Hebron, died Monday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron.

Polly E. Hardcastle, 71, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Hospice of Cincinnati.

She was a retired cook with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Madison Avenue Baptist Church, Covington. Her husband, Edward Hardcastle, died in 1982.

Survivors include daughters, Janet Mecklenburg and Gloria Sebastian, both of Newport; a son, Robert Hardcastle of San Antonio; a sister, Bertha Mullins of Amburgey; a brother, Frank Sizemore of Amburgey; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Glady Stutler Hoffman, 98, of Fort Wright, died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Villa Springs of Erlanger. She was a retired teacher with Fort Thomas Schools, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Kappa Gamma Society teachers honorary society and St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Edison Hoffman, died in 1970.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Braun of Union; a son, Charles Hoffman of Fort Mitchell; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Atlanta. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Ruth Elizabeth Hoober, 58, of Covington, died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

She was a server with Kelly's Landing and a real estate agent with Huff Realty.

Survivors include sons, Ron Hoober of Boone County and Martin Hoober of Covington; a daughter, Tracy Melton of Florence; a stepson, John Hoober of Fort Mitchell; a stepdaughter, Laura Huggins of Park Hills; her mother, Charlotte Hamm of Edgewood; a brother, Tom Hamm of Cincinnati; sisters, Dottie Rose of Canton, Mich., Donna Thomas of Shelby, Mich., and Mary Phillips of Latonia; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

John Frank Nichols, 63, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a farmer and a former roofer with Tri-State Roofing in Lexington. He was a Navy veteran.

Survivors include sons, Stanley Frank Nichols of Newport, Pa., and Ricky Nichols of Cynthiana; daughters, Susie Nichols and Cindy Phillips, both of Cynthiana, and Tammy Dean of Winchester; sisters, Garnetta of Arizona, Margaret Nichols of Cynthiana, Lorraine Cross of Lexington, Eleanor Day of Florida, Lisa Harris of Independence and Mae; brothers, Charles Nichols of Texas, Hershel Nichols of Paris, Doug Nichols of North Middletown and Albertis Nichols of Cynthiana; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Elizabeth W. Saalfeld, 93, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died at 4:35 a.m. Sunday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Charles Auxiliary. Her husband, Clem J. Saalfeld, died in 1983.

Survivors include daughters, Betty L. Huelskamp of Green Bay, Wis., Kay Hynes of San Diego and Janet Hermer of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a son, Clem J. Saalfeld Jr. of Cincinnati; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Covington. Memorials are suggested to the church of the donor's choice, or Point-ARC of Northern Kentucky, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Roswitha Scalco, 50, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Arthur R. Scott, 65, of Newport, died at 5:07 a.m. Sunday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was an inspector with Bechtel Corp., a pastor with Mount Zion/St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Richmond, Ohio, and was chaplain for the Kentucky Scottish Games. He was a past master of Masonic Lodge No. 358 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Scott; a son, Michael Scott of West Chester, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion/St. Paul United Church of Christ. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Buri al will be in Mount Zion/St. Paul United Church of Christ Church Cemetery, New Richmond. Memorials are suggested to Mount Zion/St. Paul United Church of Christ, Clermontville and Laurel Roads, New Richmond, Ohio 45157. Jason Sweet, 30, of Covington, died Wednesday at Westside Health Center, Cincinnati. He was a member of Kirby Road Baptist Church in Cincinnati and Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Lonnie G. Sweet Sr. of Nashville, Tenn., and Diane Kindel of Cincinnati; a brother, Lonnie G. Sweet Jr. of Covington; a sister, Tia Bessenbacher of Cincinnati; and a grandmother, Earlene Sweet of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Mary Ann Woodyard, 61, of Corinth, died Monday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Rogers-McDonald Funeral Home, Corinth.

Kathleen Yates, 90, of Newport, died at 1 a.m. Sunday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a seamstress with Hyde Park Clothes, Newport, and was an aide with Lakeside Place Nursing Home, which is now Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center. Her husband, Cecil Yates, died in 1966.

Survivors include daughters, Jean Dees and Bonnie Brock, both of Highland Heights; a son, Herschell Yates of Florence; a sister, Mildred Stevens of Highland Heights; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Grove Ridge Cemetery, Casey County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

John R. "Jack" Zumbiel, 76, of Florence, died at 2:25 p.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired trouble foreman with Cincinnati Gas & Electric, a former coach with Northern Kentucky Knothole Baseball and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, Randy Zumbiel of Louisville and Gary Zumbiel of Florence; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
