Robert L. Graves, 90, farmed his entire life

Robert L. Graves lived a life deeply rooted in Boone County.

Mr. Graves was born on a farm his family had owned since 1798, and he died there, at 8:50 a.m. Monday, in the 124-year-old house where he was born.

The 90-year-old Hebron resident farmed his entire life, raising corn, tobacco, hay, chickens, turkeys, sheep and hogs, said his son, James Graves of Hebron.

Mr. Graves loved the soil and loved to watch things grow, said his daughter, Linda Bryant of Burlington. It was a life of continual field work, with only a brief respite in late July and early August, about the time of the Boone County Fair, whose executive committee Mr. Graves served on.

Looking back, James Graves wondered how his father found time for so many other things, such as serving as a council member for the Hebron Lutheran Church and as secretary of the Hebron Lions Club.

All the field work gave him lon gevity, and helped make up for his years of smoking Camel cigarettes, his son said.

More than four years ago, Mr. Graves entered a hospice program. Doctors expected him to live only a few weeks.

But the tough old farmer made a miraculous recovery. His family took him home and nursed him back to health.

His wife of 65 years, Mildred Dell Eubanks Graves, took care of him with help from their children.

"We didn't think of it as a bur den, " James said. "It was hard at times, but he was worth every min ute of it."

In May 2000, Mr. Graves and three other members of the He bron High School class of 1930 had their first class reunion.

They talked about their two teachers, their long hikes to school, the old wooden floors covered with oil and the scarlet fever epidemic that shut down classes.

Mr. Graves didn't rejoin the hospice program until a few weeks before his death, from a mass in his lungs partly caused by smok ing-induced emphysema.

His son, who still works on and lives on the family farm, said he will especially miss telling his father what he has done every day.

"We should all be so lucky to have a father like him, " Ms. Bry ant said. "He was a good Christian man who practiced what he preached."
