Libby Kaucher, chief deputy of Kenton County tax office
For more than half a century, Kenton County residents with questions about their property taxes got help from Libby Kaucher.
She started working in the tax office in 1948 and was still chief deputy there Friday when she died at her home at 7:40 a.m .
Elizabeth "Libby" Kruempelman Kaucher was 84.
When she started at the PVA's office, most of to day's subdivisions were family farms. Her family homestead is the Kruempelman Farm in Fort Mitchell. As a child, Mrs. Kaucher sometimes helped plant tomatoes there.
She married
Ralph D. Kaucher, a drafts man, and they lived just down the street from the family farm.
Mrs. Kaucher never drove. Her husband would drop her off at work.
She was the memory and the spirit of the tax office, and had already been there for 30 years when current Property Valuation Administrator Mark Vogt took office at age 24.
"She treated me with respect, and basically taught me everything I know, " Vogt said in an interview in 1998, when Mrs. Kaucher celebrated her 50th year on the job.
He said her attitude and pace inspired people a fraction of her age.
"She moves at a run, " he said.
Mrs. Kaucher welcomed Vogt into her family circle. When her husband died last year, Vogt saw her through the grief and helped her stay in her family house. He was her caretaker when she died.
