William Kroth, loved children, owner of Hilltop Inn
William James Kroth showed the world a tough exterior, but inside was a man who loved children, his son Michael said.
Last Easter, Mr. Kroth helped hide 54 dozen eggs for a public Easter egg hunt in their Newport neighborhood.

Mr. Kroth served as president of the Belle Acres Sportsman Club in Newport, a position which his father also had held.
In that capacity, he directed the club's charitable work, such as sponsoring visits with Santa Claus for little children.
"I thought he was real charitable toward children and things like that, " said Michael Kroth, who lives in Newport.
Mr. Kroth loved to fish for bass. As a child, he won a state casting contest along with his father and mother.
Every day after school, he would watch his two grandchildren until their parents got home from work.
