Carl 'Rick' Bersch, 49, always put others first
Despite battling with multiple health problems throughout his life, Carl Richard "Rick" Bersch, Jr. always insisted on putting others first.
"He was always taking care of the next person, " said his wife, Alice Huck Bersch.
Mr. Bersch died Tuesday morning at Jewish Hospital. He was 49.
Mr. Bersch had three kidney transplants and various other medical problems.
That never held him back, though, said his family.
He graduated from Chase Law School and passed the Kentucky Bar.
He also became a real estate broker and opened Bersch Realty in Highland Heights, Ky.
He volunteered his time to the Kidney Foundation of Greater Cincinnati as the secretary to it s board.
"No matter how bad the pain, he worked all the time, " said Diana Heidelberg of Cold Spring, Ky., a sister. "Through being a law yer and real estate broker, he had the opportunity to help a lot of people."
He was a member of United Methodist Church of Highland Heights, the Northern Kentucky and Chase Law School alumni associations and the Northern Kentucky Board of Realtors.
Her brother will be remembered for his positive attitude and perseverance, Heidelberg said.
"He had a love of life. The most important thing people will remember is his fortitude and determination."
Also surviving are his parents, Carl and Louise Bersch Sr. of Cold Spring, and another sister, Beverly Bersch of Cold Spring.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Marie J. Burke, 93, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:05 p.m. Monday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
She was a retired secretary with Dunlops Men's Department Store.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.
Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Paul W. Curley, 84, of Elsmere, died Monday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.
He was a service representative for Singer Sewing Co. and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
His wife, Dorothy Curley, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughters, Sherry Parks of Erlanger, Rosemary Gunkel of Union, Dottie Kresser of Columbus, Ind., and Diane Boering of Florence; sons, Dennis J. Curley of Latonia Lakes, William J. Curley of Burlington and Steven P. Curley of Walton; brothers, James Robert Curley of Covington and George P. Curley Jr. of Latonia; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Church, Florence.
Visitation w ill be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright.

Robert Frederick Durbin, 82, of Louisville, died Friday at his sister's home in Florence.
He was a retired Army veteran and formerly worked at the Naval Ordnance Plant in Louisville.
His wife, Louise Wind Dur bin, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sisters, Mildred McVay of Florence, Roberta Hall of Riverdale, Ga., and Theresa Raines of Montpilier, Ind.; and brothers, Joseph Durbin of Cincinnati, Daniel Durbin of Dayton and James Durbin of Jackson, Ga.
Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethany Memorial Park, Louisville.

Alcena King Ernest, 84, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Marion Ernest, and a son, Billy Raffett, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a brother, J. D. King of Paris; a sister, Erva Jean Krause of Texas; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Clay "Dick" Hall, 71, of Bradenton, Fla., died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
He was a retired employee of Navistar International and a member of Fifth Evangelical Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 1031 and Loyal Order of Moose No. 1223, Bradenton. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Sons David Hall and Thomas Hall both preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Gail D. Burnham Hall; sons, Michael Clay Hall of Burlington and Gary Douglas Hall of West Jefferson, Ohio; a daughter, Mary Esther Hall of Richmond; sisters, Ethel Conley and Mattie McCain, both of Springfield, Ohio, and Skip Barger of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; brothers, Hillard Hall of Pinetop, Albro Hall of Waddy and Harold Hall of Topmost; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fifth Evangelical Church, Springfield.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home, Springfield.
