Robert L. Stephenson, 98, an avid gardener
When people needed to find Robert L. Stephenson, they didn't have to look far: The 98-year-old was often tending to plants in the backyard garden of his Villa Hills home.
From onions and bell peppers to tomatoes and raspberries, Mr. Stephenson grew baskets of food. But his favorite, above all, were his tomatoes.
"He loved tomatoes - loved to eat them, " said Faye Burdick of Villa Hills, Mr. Stephenson's daughter. "There was something that was very rewarding to him about tomatoes."
Mr. Stephenson died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital South in Edgewood after several bouts with pneumonia.
Larry Zembrodt of Villa Hills, a neighbor for about 40 years, said Mr. Stephenson always kept him in stock with tomatoes.
"He would holler over during the summer time, 'You need any tomatoes?"' Zembrodt said.
Mr. Stephenson had an old-fashioned feel to him, Burdick said. He was one of the founding fathers of Villa Hills, and he did his homework by an oil lamp as a youth.
He also had a traditional romantic side. A few years ago, he wrote a short story based on his relationship with his wife, Alice Lillick Stephenson, who died in 1996.
"It was really a sweet and tender love story, " Burdick said.
Friends and neighbors would drop by Mr. Stephenson's house, where they would sit on the back porch and chat.
"(It was) kind of a slower way of life that perhaps we have lost now, " Burdick said.
