Fredrick 'Fritz' Meirose, hero of World War II

Fredrick "Fritz" Meirose was a genuine war hero.

He survived the carnage of D-Day on Omaha Beach, then was wounded three times in the next 11 months, before World War II ended in Europe. The last time he took shrapnel in the neck, which he carried in his body for the rest of his life.

In the Rhineland, when his unit came under fire and both his captain and lieutenant were killed, he led five other soldiers to safety. For that feat he was awarded a Bronze Star and Presidential Citation.

He also wound up receiving a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
