Fredrick 'Fritz' Meirose, hero of World War II
Fredrick "Fritz" Meirose was a genuine war hero.
He survived the carnage of D-Day on Omaha Beach, then was wounded three times in the next 11 months, before World War II ended in Europe. The last time he took shrapnel in the neck, which he carried in his body for the rest of his life.
In the Rhineland, when his unit came under fire and both his captain and lieutenant were killed, he led five other soldiers to safety. For that feat he was awarded a Bronze Star and Presidential Citation.
He also wound up receiving a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
Mr. Meirose, 83, of Fort Wright, died at Woodcrest Manor in Fort Wright on Friday.
His wife, Mary Gramke Meirose, said her husband's courage extended beyond his military service.
When St. Aloysius, his childhood parish church in Covington, burned in 1985, Mr. Meirose worked all night with other volunteers to salvage sacred vessels and vestments before the walls collapsed.
A sports enthusiast, Mr. Meirose was a youth baseball coach in Covington for more than 15 years. He "taught the kids and enjoyed the pros, " his wife said.
He enjoyed playing sports, too, and was especially good at darts, which he learned to play in England during the war. He liked to take on younger players.
"He took some of their money, " his wife said.
As a skilled butcher and meat cutter for Kahn's, Mr. Meirose filled special orders for top restaurants all over the United States. He retired after 37 years.
His first wife, Elizabeth Herzog Meirose, died in 1975.
Other survivors include a son, Dan Meirose of Ludlow; a step daughter, Cynthia Collins of Fort Wright; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday at Mother of God Church, Covington. NO VISITATION

Rhonda D. Abernathy, 56, of Newport, died Monday at her home. She was a former vice president with MRI, Detroit.
Survivors include a son, Randall Abernathy of Folsom, Calif.
Memorial services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Cremation will be at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home and Crematory, Cincinnati. Ruth Berkemeier, 76, of Latonia, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia. Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Michael Anthony Brown, 28, of Hebron, died Monday at his home.
He was a line chef with Argosy Casino in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.
Survivors include his mother, Nina Brown of Fort Thomas; sisters, Patty Abney of Richmond, Teri Brown of Fort Thomas, Dr. Mary Beth Mattingly of Lexington and Sharon Vogt of Alexandria; a brother, Roger Brown of Camp Springs; and his fiancee, Shana Burke of Cincinnati.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.
Charles Kelly Carroll, 55, of Latonia Lakes, died Saturday at his home.
He was a heavy equipment operator with the Carlisle Construction Co., Wilder. Survivors include his wife, Vicki Margaret Elizabeth Smith Carroll; sons, Dallas Carroll of Alexandria, Dwayne Carroll of Burlington, Darrin Carroll and Dustin Carroll, both of Union; his father, James Carroll of Wolfe County; sisters, Brenda Vickers of Silver Grove, and Rosemary Trent of Wolfe County; brothers, Bobby Carroll of Ryland Heights, Billy Carroll of Elsmere, Him Trent, Albert Trent, Marty Trent, Dallas Trent, Danny Paul Trent and Scottie Trent, all of Wolfe County; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Hebron.
Charles Daniel, 58, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a former welder at the Littleford Brothers Company in Newport.
He also was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1469 in Covington, and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include a sister, Barbara Shaw of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and seven brothers, Thomas Daniel and Robert Daniel, both of Davie, Fla., Ronald Daniel of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Douglas Daniel of Cincinnati, Michael Daniel and Timothy Daniel, both of Alexandria, and Randy Daniel of Colorado.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Grandview Cemetery, Mentor. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
James A. Matthews Sr., 74, of Dayton, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a draftsman and engineer with General Electric, Cincinnati, a member of St. Bernard Church in Dayton and an Army veteran of World War II. He worked bingo at his church, and was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 and the Kersten O'Day Sportsman Club in Dayton. His wife, Helen Winterman Matthews, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Gardner and Sheryl Stolze, both of Cincinnati, Helen Krieg and Mary Matthews, both of Wilder, Pamela Matthews of Dayton and Karen Sears of Florence; sons, Timothy G. Matthews and James A. Matthews Jr., both of Dayton; sisters, Janice Kennedy of Crestview and Helen Rath of Alexandria; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Winfred E. "Ben" Simpson, 78, of Walton, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a retired self-employed carpenter and farmer, a member of Walton Christian Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae "Pete" Wallace Simpson; daughters, Neva A. Gibson of Walton and Brenda M. Messmer of Crittenden; sons, Randy D. Simpson of South Whitley, Ind., and Tyra B. Simpson of Piner; brothers, Orville Simpson of Seattle, Opal W. Simpson of Crittenden, Gene S. Simpson of Glencoe, Bob D. Simpson of Walton and Charlie R. Simpson of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Zella M. Elliott of Tampa and Betty Augenstein of Florence; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Scott M. Stierer, 87, of Fort Thomas, died at 10:35 p.m. Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was a retired mechanic with Queen City Metro, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Evelyn Stierer, died in 1986. Sons, Scott Stierer and Byron Stierer, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Paul R. Turner, 76, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a retired driver and salesman for Meyer Dairy. He was a member of Second Twelve Mile Baptist Church of Peach Grove, an Army World War II veteran, a 50-year member of Woodmen of the World, a member of the Scottish Rite of Covington, a member of the Alexandria Lodge No. 152 Masons, and a member of the Alexandria Chapter No. 337 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Jean Turner; a son, Gregory A. Turner Sr. of Alexandria; and his mother, Mary Lou Wolf of Grant's Lick.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to charity of the donor's choice.
Brent Howard Wininger, 55, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.
He was a senior computer technician with EDS Corp., Cincinnati, a member of the Grant County 4-H Council and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Wininger; sons, Marc Walter Wininger of Hebron, Kenneth James Wininger of Williamstown and Brom Edward Wininger of Zion Station; sisters, Ernestine Duvall of Woodbine, Patricia Welch of Cincinnati and Karen Allen of Dayton; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
