Everett Lehman, 74, family man who enjoyed simple things
When Everett "Ed" Lehman thought he had only three months to live, he threw a wake for himself.
He wanted to see all the people he loved together one last time.
That was three years ago.
His positive attitude was credited with allowing him to hold off a little longer the congestive heart failure that eventually took his life.
Mr. Lehman, 74, died Tuesday St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Covington.
His daughters, Angie Watts and Tina Neumann, both of Cincinnati, remember him as a gentle and kind man who always thought of other people.
"He would be by the bedside of any friend or family member who was sick, " said Watts. "He would stay there for hours."
It was that kind of loving care that Mr. Lehman gave to his wife, Marian Smith Lehman, when she was stricken with cancer.
He cared for her at home during most of her illness; she died in 1988.
Neumann said her father was a family man who enjoyed simple things, like taking his children to the playground in Latonia and stop ping for ice cream.
He would call his grandchildren every night, said Watts, "just to say good night."
"He left his mark everywhere he went, just by being who he was, " Neumann said.
Mr. Lehman was a machinist retired from Gusher Inc., a former officer with the International Union of Aerospace Workers and Machinists and a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was a former member of the Covington Boosters Club and St. Ann Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
