Richard Howard, former Holmes High principal

Richard G. Howard, a former principal of Holmes High School who led the Covington School District as acting superintendent, died at 12:32 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. He was 63.

But he quickly moved into administration as dean of boys and assistant principal and principal. He was principal of Covington Junior High School and later was principal of Holmes junior and senior high schools.

"He was highly respected by his teachers and he was always fair to teachers and to students, " said his wife, Bert Browning Howard. "He was very dedicated."

Mr. Howard's son, Dan, said his dad's greatest interest was his family, which centered on his wife and sons and grandchildren, but included students and teachers who remained in touch with him through retirement.

As a young man he taught Sunday school and coached softball. In later years he became a support system for his son, Tim Howard, who had been injured in a swimming pool accident. "My dad took care of him and was always there for him and his family, " Dan Howard said.

For the past three years, Mr. How==ard had worked at Dan's company, DH Express. "He ran the warehouse and unloaded the trucks. ... Old stu==dents would come out and see him, " Dan Howard said.

"I loved working with him. He was always upbeat and positive. He ran a good ship, " he said. "He was a great father."
