John Hesler Jr., loved to go fishing
For the Hesler family, fishing was never a small deal: a tribe of 30 children, led by their grandfather, John William Hesler Jr. of Maysville, would spend the day with their lines in the water, hoping for a good catch.
Fishing was Mr. Hesler's specialty, family members say. He taught the pasttime to all seven of his children and 50 of his 69 grandchildren.
"I think fishing was his main thing after he got older and retired from farming, " said Mr. Hesler's son, Jessie Hesler of Maysville.
Mr. Hesler went fishing May 8, just two days before he slipped into a coma. He died Monday at 9:37 a.m. at his home after battling skin cancer for three years.
Mr. Hesler's children echoed the same loving opinion of their father: He was a friendly Christian who cared most about his family.
"Whenever you needed him, he was there, " said Brenda Simms of Lewis burg, Mr. Hesler's youngest daughter. "I don't care if it was 3 a.m., whenever you needed him, he was there."
At night, Mr. Hesler often gathered his children and they'd sing while he played the guitar. Each had a special song they shared with him, said Jo Ann Dodson of Sardis, Mr. Hesler's oldest daughter.
Mr. Hesler sat in the front pew of his church and tended to the flowers in his yard almost every day.
He was a farmer, a member of Maysville Community Lighthouse Church and an Army veteran of World War II. Sons, Jimmy Dale Hesler and Larry W. Hesler both preceded him in death.
