Elaine Henry

Elaine D. Henry, age 85, of Mankato Interment Woodland Hills Memorial Park.

Elaine was married Everett C. Henry, July 6, 1941 in Lake Crystal, MN.

During her working career she worked for Piggly Wiggly, Madsen’s Super Valu, Midtex, and Johnson Fishing. She enjoyed camping, fishing, church activities, collecting earrings, and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her family. She was a member of Hilltop United Methodist Church and VFW Post 950.

Elaine is survived by 2 sons, Darryl Henry of Hanford, CA, and Warren Henry of Los Lunas, NM; 3 daughters, Sharon (Robert) Marquardt, Linda (Leon) Salfer, and Jillene (Dean) Salfer all of Mankato; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Beverly Simmett of Plymouth.

She was preceded in died Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato, with Rev. Paul Nolting officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim's Rest born on February 16, 1943 in Mankato. He was the son of Clarence and Gladys (Miller) Beetch. Gary attended Franklin Elementary School and Immanuel Lutheran School. He was employed with Madsen's Grocery, which later became Randall's. He also worked as a car wash attendant and was a crossing guard for Franklin School for over 30 years. Gary was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed biking, traveling with friends, eating at the Eagle's Nest in Eagle Lake, sports, wrestling, Westerns, and rides with his mother through Sibley Park.

Gary is survived by his mother, Gladys Beetch of Mankato; two aunts, Helen Miller and Helen Young, both of Mankato; good friend, Joanie Strand of Madison Lake; and several cousins, other family and friends.

He was preceded in born September 22, 1914, in Medo Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, to Clem and Grace (Emerson) DeRemer. She passed away unexpectedly on November 23, 1976. Vivian passed away on August 7, 2002. Vivian moved to Three Links Care Center in Northfield in August 2005.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Francis and Peggy Steffel of Port St. Lucie, Florida; her daughter, Mary Jean Schreiber of Green Valley, Arizona; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; her sister, Benita Korth of Mankato; her sister-in-law, Gertrude DeRemer of North Mankato; close friends, Bob and Bev Kulseth of Mankato; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in passed away Sunday evening, November 4, 2007, at Three Links Care Center in Northfield at the age of 93.

Memorial services were November 9, 2007 at Three Links Care Center Chapel with Fr. Dennis Dempsey officiating. Cemetery, Mapleton.

Melvin Kaasa

Melvin Thomas Kaasa, age 87, of North Mankato, was at home when he went peacefully to be with his Savior on Saturday, November 24, 2007.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in North Mankato, with Rev. Kevin Melin officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Clark's Grove born on July 14, 1920 in Kennedy, MN. He was the son of Gilbert and Minnie (Quist) Kaasa. His family then moved to the Clarks Grove area where he attended country school (having to walk up hill both ways). Melvin graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1939. In January of 1940, he joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country for six years. Melvin was stationed on the USS Saratoga, USS Kane, USS Takanas Bay, and finished his career on the USS Ranger with the rank of Warrant Officer in April 1946.

Melvin was united in marriage to the love of his life, Dorothy Nelson on November 18, 1944 in San Diego, CA. They enjoyed 63 years together and shared in raising two children. After the Navy, Melvin went to the MN School of Business in Minneapolis, graduating in November 1948 with a business degree. He worked as an Internal Revenue agent in Waseca, Worthington, and retired from the Mankato office in 1975. Melvin was the mayor of Lake Crystal from 1976 to 1982. During this time he became active in helping to form the MN Assoc. of Small Cities. He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in North Mankato, where he served on the trustee board. Melvin also volunteered at the Summit center doing income taxes for others and was President for two terms with NARFE Chapter 282 of Mankato. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, collecting coins, faceting gem stones, bird watching, traveling, spending winters in Texas and summers at Pathfinder Village in Hinckley.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kaasa of North Mankato; son, Thomas Kaasa of International falls; daughter, Kristi Burtzel of North Mankato; grandchildren, Becky (Lawrence) Simmons of St. Paul, Rachel Kaasa of Bahrain, Persian Gulf, Jason Burtzel of Mankato, and Lisa Burtzel of North Mankato; one great-grandson, Henry Simmons; also many nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in born Charlene A. Klages, September 11, 1925 to Anthony M. and Hadwig Klages in Mankato, MN, later moved to Winona, attended the College of St. Theresa and eventually met and death by her husband, John.

In addition to being a very busy and loving mother, Charlene was also very active in her church, The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, in community affairs and was a longtime volunteer at St. Anne’s Hospice. In life, Charlene was a wonderfully warm, caring friend to many, a devoted, loving wife and a gentle, protective mother. Her physical presence will certainly be missed, but her sweet spirit will be felt forever.

Visitation Saturday, November 24 at 9:00 a.m., service at 10:00 a.m. at Cerenity Care Center Chapel in St. Paul, MN. A memorial service will be held in Winona at a later date and will be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Anne’s Hospice in Winona, or to Cerenity Care Center.

Patsy Songer

Patsy Marie Songer, daughter of Ada Harris and the late Alfred Harris was died as a result of a traffic accident on November 7, 2007 in Key West, Florida.

Memorial service will be held at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Mankato on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service. Mankato Mortuary assisting with arrangements.

Patsy was educated in the Mankato school system. She was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, traveling, baking and cooking. Surviving her are her mother Ada Harris of Mankato; her children Julie Ann Hoffman, David Christopherson, Sarah LeBrun, and Angel Peipho; her brother Dean Harris (Suzanne); her sisters Pamela Webber and Paula Evers, and sister-in-law Sue Harris as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded in died on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the Gardenview Nursing Home in Le Sueur.

She was married William L. Rheaume on May 21, 1955 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the Le Sueur Garden Club, St. Anne’s Choir and St. Anne’s C.C.W.

She is survived by her sister, Florence Monahan of Le Sueur; sisters-in-law, Marietta Wolf of Bayport, Minnesota, Pat Rheaume of Mankato, Beverly Rheaume of St. Paul and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Danberry of North Mankato. Many loving nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
