Harold R. “Bob” Schwarz
Harold R. “Bob” Schwarz, 83, of Preston, MN, formerly of Pemberton, MN, born October 30, 1924, in Blue Earth County, MN, the son of Harold and Laura ( Kurth) Schwarz. He was baptized on November 23, 1924, and confirmed on April 10, 1938, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, a Wisconsin Synod Church in St. Clair, MN. He attended country school in Mound Township, Blue Earth County. He served in the US Army in the Pacific Theatre during WW II from 1945-47. He was a farmer all his life and an avid horseman. He cemetery. Friends may call at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston 4-8:00 p.m., Thursday and at the church on Friday an hour before the service.
Shirley Raatz
New Ulm — Shirley (Mrs. Arlo) Raatz, 64, of New Ulm, formerly of St. James, Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Joyce Tollefson Capp officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Funeral Service in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church.Shirley Mae Garten, the daughter of Emmett and Laura (Lorenz) Garten was death by brothers Rodney and LaVerne Garten, two nieces and one nephew.
Virgil Maynard Pioske
Virgil Maynard Pioske, 68, of St. Peter, Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Eric Natwick officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s (Mountville) Lutheran born on March 14, 1939 in Le Sueur County to Kenneth Pioske and Myrtle (Hahn) (Pioske) Rudenick. A few years later, the family moved to Pine County, where Virgil graduated from Sandstone High School in 1958. He then received vocational training for auto mechanics in Pine City. In February of 1964 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Langenbach for about 11 years until their divorce. Virgil was a worker for General Electric for a number of years. He then moved to Minneapolis where he worked various jobs as a handyman. Around 1994, due to his declining health, Virgil moved to St. Peter, MN to be closer to his family. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Virgil enjoyed working on cars and fixing various electronic devices.He is survived by former wife Kathleen Pioske of Spring Lake Park, MN, three children, Gregg Pioske of Hudson, WI, Shawn Pioske of Hudson, WI, and Karri (Matthew) Linke of Lino Lakes, MN; three grandchildren, Devin Hamilton, Austin Schollen, and Jordis Linke; brother, Larry Pioske of Williams, MN; sister Diana Pioske Wells of Bellingham, WA; two half-brothers, Jimmy Pioske and Ed Pioske, both of Le Sueur, MN; and their families.He was preceded in born on June 16, 1935 in St. James, Minnesota. He death by his parents and an infant sister, Marlene.Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Albion Lutheran Church in rural St. James with Pastors Rowell and Asplund officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Albion Lutheran Church died Wednesday morning at her home surrounded by her family on her 94th Birthday.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the United Church of Christ, New Ulm with Rev. Hank Campbell officiating. Burial will be in New Ulm City born October 30, 1913 to Fred and Alvina (Schaefer) Zimmermann in Stark Township, Brown County, Minnesota. She was raised on the family farm and moved to New Ulm in August of 1926. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and graduated from New Ulm High School in 1932. She was employed by J.C. Penney Co. from her graduation until her marriage to Walter P. J. Miller on June 19, 1934. She was employed by J.C. Penney for 10 years and Dannheim's Dairy for 21 years. Edna death by parents; husbands, Walter Miller and Shorty Heiser; brother, Arthur Zimmermann; and sister, Alma Milbrett.
Grace A. Hammond
Grace Arlene Hammond, age 83, a resident of Oak Hills Living Center, New Ulm and formerly of rural Lake Crystal, Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Butternut with Rev. Gene Alms officiating. Burial will be in Jerusalem born August 17, 1924 to Albert and Gladys (Christenson) Sherry in Soldiers Grove, WI. She graduated from Reedstown High School, Reedstown, WI in 1942. Grace served her country with the Army WAC during World War II. She graduated from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, IL in 1952. Grace was united in marriage to Roger L. Hammond on April 18, 1953 in Soldiers Grove, WI. She was employed with the Madelia Community Hospital as a registered nurse retiring in 1982. Grace was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher and member of WELCA. She enjoyed needlework and handiwork, knitting afghans, watching TV, and word search puzzles.
Grace is survived by her three children, R. Lee Hammond of Hanska, Ingrid Oswald of Madelia, Shoshonna (Rodney) Oswald of rural Lake Crystal; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arnie (Mabel) Sherry of Viroqua, WI, Earl Sherry of Madison, WI, Tom Sherry of Reedstown, WI; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Grace was preceded in death.Eunice (Keim) Johnson was married her high school sweetheart, Harlan Hayden, in 1940. They lived in St. James, Pipestone, Springfield and then in Madelia where they owned and operated Hayden Furniture for many years. Har married Melvin Ullrich. They continued to live in Madelia for their passed away Eunice continued to live in Madelia until poor health caused her to move closer to her children. She lived in Springfield for a few years and then moved to assisted living in New Ulm where she remained until the time of her death by her parents, her husbands Harlan Hayden and Melvin Ullrich, her son Father James Hayden and her grandson Ryan Hayden.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 2, 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madelia with burial in Calvary died Sunday, October 28, 2007 at the Oak Hills Living Center of New Ulm following a brief hospitalization for cancer.Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm City cemetery by the New Ulm veterans’ organization.Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday morning from 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.He is survived by his wife, Sharon of New Ulm, daughters and son: Catherine Sperl of Wisconsin Dells, WI; Gail Fidler of Middleton, PA; Mary Ann and Mike Riebel of Mankato, MN; Mike Sperl of Tyler, MN and Margaret Johnson of New Ulm; sisters and brother; 14 grandchildren including Ryan and Andrea Riebel of Mankato, MN and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in born at home to John P. and Bertha (Hauser) Sperl. His grandparents John N. and Mary (Kiem) Sperl and great-grandparents Andrew and Anna (Ubl) Sperl immigrated from Rindl, Bohemia. He attended country school. He served in the U.S. Army as a Panama Canal guard.He worked with his brothers and nephews in his business Walt Sperl Drywall and Carpentry in the New Ulm area for many years. He worked at the family dairy farm and had his own milk route prior to the birth of his children.He loved children, fishing, hunting, reading, playing cards and polka music.I pray that I may fish until my dying day. And when I come to my last cast, I most humbly pray. When in the Lord’s soft landing net I am peacefully asleep, that in his mercy I be judged good enough to keep.

Cornelius La Verne Gregor, 87, of Le Center, funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Burial is at Woodlawn born on August 15, 1920 in Montgomery.He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Wondra) Gregor; four children, Pamela (Terry) Dunkelbeck of Le Center, Sandra (Bernie) Weber of Farmington, Brian Gregor ( and friend Judith Kennedy) of Le Center, and Robert (Cindy) Gregor of Chaska; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and brother, Leslie Gregor of Le Center.He is preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and six sisters.
