Lucille M. "Betty" Gruss
Lucille M. “Betty” Gruss, age 93, of Faribault, Interment will be held at the Northfield born on June 22, 1915 in Northfield, MN. She attended Faribault High School and graduated with the class of 1933. Following high school, Betty attended St. Mary’s Hall in Faribault for two years then earned her Teaching Certificate from the South Dakota School for the Deaf to teach deaf students. Betty first taught in South Dakota and later moved on to Frederick, Maryland, Cedar Springs, SC and for 22 years taught at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf in Faribault. Betty loved teaching and being with children. She taught Sunday school for many years at the Congregational Church in Faribault and in retirement worked with Cambodian families that moved to Faribault teaching them English. Betty also enjoyed baking, reading and loved birds. She was a member of the Faribault Women’s Club and was an active member at the Congregational Church of Faribault.
She is survived by her sister, Sally Gruss of Bettendorf, IA; by five nieces and nephews, Wendy Severns, Susan Leece, Roger Gruss Jr., Edward Gruss Jr. and Mary Perrone and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Faribault.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault, with Rev. David Hurtt, associate pastor of First English Lutheran Church in Faribault, officiating. born on January 3, 1917. She graduated from Faribault High School with the class of 1937. Maxine death on November 13, 1992. Maxine was devoted to her family as a homemaker, and then later worked at Wilson’s Foods, Faribault Regional Center, and Ochs’ Department Store.
She is survived by three sons, Thomas (Carol) Gullickson of Bloomington, MN, Terry Gullickson of Faribault, and Tyler (Brenda) Gullickson of Albert Lea; nine grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at her home in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato, with Rev. Don Rauscher officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary, with a 6:45 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitation continues one hour prior to service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Calvary born September 10, 1930 to William and Margaret (Trampart) Wenner in Mankato. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy in 1948. Jay was united in marriage to Dennis Nourie in Mankato on November 22, 1954. She was employed as a staffing secretary for Immanuel Saint Joseph's Hospital in Mankato for 26 years, and following retirement she volunteered there as well. Jay was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where she served on the Helping Hands committee. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Jay enjoyed playing cards, flowers, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Jay is survived by her husband Dennis; two sons, Mark (Dianne) Nourie of Lakeville, Dan (Ann) Nourie of Mankato; one daughter-in-law, Tami and her fiancé, Terry Dobbelaere of Mankato; seven grandchildren, Jason, Adam, Jessica, Ryan, Leah, Matt, Haley; one great grandson, Sean Haws; one brother, Paul (Lorraine) Wenner of Sartell; one sister-in-law, Dee Wenner of Dallas, TX, also many nieces and nephews.
Jay was preceded in died on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Faribault.
married Leo O. Ayers on November 17, 1934 in North Mankato. After getting death by her husband-Leo, two sons-Leo Ayers Jr. and James Ayers, three brothers-John, Robert and Vincent Johnson, and two sons-in-law, Larry Brandt and Robert Voelker.
Visitation will be held at the Prosch-Dennis Funeral Home in Waterville on Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 1-3 PM with a 3:00 PM prayer service. Burial will be at Calvary passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2009.
Graveside services will be held at the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park in Faribault, MN on Friday, April 17, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at the American Lutheran Church in Prescott on April 25 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Wallace Cole officiating. She was death of both her father and mother, Bernita served as parish worker in Lutheran churches in Duluth, MN, Garden Grove, CA, and Mankato, MN. She served for twenty two years at Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission, Rock Point, AZ, first as cook for the Navajo school children and then as education director for the developing Navajo congregation.
At age 65, Bernita volunteered to work in Papua New Guinea. For a year she lived on a small island off the coast of PNG, teaching home economics at the Lutheran school there. The following year she returned to Rock Point and worked there until her retirement in 1990, when she moved to Prescott.
She was a member of American Evangelical Lutheran Church. Eleven years ago Bernita developed Alzheimer’s disease. For nearly seven years she lived at Peaceful Valley Care Home where she received loving care. She is survived by several second cousins, the Wallace Cole family who “adopted” her many years ago, and a large group of friends.
She is survived by extended family.
She was preceded in died Monday, April 13, 2009 at Brookdale Senior Living in Owatonna while under the care of Heartland Hospice.
married Ralph D. Johnson Jr. on November 5, 1960 in Lu Verne, Iowa. Phyllis lived much of her adult life in Owatonna and Zumbrota before returning to Waseca. Her proudest accomplishments were in service to children. She served as Children's Librarian at Carnegie Public Library in Zumbrota and also for many years as a Sunday School teacher and Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and traveling. Phyllis was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Waseca; two sons, Jeffrey (Sharon) Johnson of Great Falls, VA and Rick (Mary Jo) Johnson of St. Paul; one grandson; and three granddaughters. She is also survived by three brothers, Melvin Strand, Marlyn (Darlette) Strand, and Clifton (Mary) Strand all of Waseca; two sisters-in-law, Dixie Strand of Waseca and Dorothy Strand of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in Cemetery in Waseca.
